In a move designed to reduce his cap hit in 2015, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has restructured his contract.

According to ProFootballTalk's official Twitter account, the mechanisms for this restructuring were already in place:

Albert Breer of NFL.com notes that the move cleared up space for the team to bring back one of its veteran players:

Of course, Cowboys fans will probably be fixated on what the phrase "among other things" might mean, namely, in regard to the team potentially trading for running back Adrian Peterson to replace the departed DeMarco Murray. That particular move has been speculated about by many, including David Moore of The Dallas Morning News

However, reports to the contrary are surfacing, such as this one from Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports:

Romo, 34, would probably love to have a player like Peterson to replace Murray, however unlikely that trade may be.

On Tuesday, Romo told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas that he would have taken a pay cut to keep Murray, (via Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas):

"

DeMarco ended up asking me, "Why don't you take a pay cut?" I was like, "I will. I will take a pay cut to go do this." I was like, "They're going to restructure me and the whole thing," that's the same thing in some ways just for salary-cap purposes. He was like, "OK, now we're back to being friends." "You're really worried about me? I would take $5 million less if it meant getting you back." He knew that.

"

The veteran quarterback is coming off of an excellent 2014 season, throwing for 3,705 yards, 34 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 69.9 percent of his passes. He also led the Cowboys to an NFC East title.

Players restructuring their deals is nothing new, of course, but the Cowboys are pressed against the cap, and this move is certainly important. It gives the Cowboys a bit more flexibility to improve their offense, which is crucial in the wake of Murray's departure.
