Andre Ward Vows to Fight Carl Froch in England as Brit Eyes Gennady Golovkin
Andre Ward is eager to fight Carl Froch once more, and he is happy to agree to a bout on English soil, but not in the Cobra's hometown of Nottingham.
The super-middleweight pair have been ordered to fight by the WBA and Ward is now seemingly coming around to the idea of coming to England to fight the man he beat on points in 2011.
The American Super World champion refused to contemplate a mooted fight at Nottingham's City Ground, but he named Wembley a possible alternative, per Sky Sports:
"The UK is one thing, Nottingham is something different. Now he’s saying ‘well, I came to America, now you need to come to Nottingham’. The thing is this: Atlantic City, where we fought the finals of the Super Six, it’s thousands of miles away from my home – that’s a road fight. I live on the west coast, the fight was on the east coast, which was a six-hour plane ride for me. I’m not willing to come to Nottingham, I don’t think I should have to, but Wembley stadium, the UK as a whole – I would love to come.
"
It is, as yet, unclear whether WBA champion Froch will agree to fight the 31-year-old Ward anywhere other than at Nottingham Forest's stadium.
Speaking to iFL TV below, the 37-year-old expressed his eagerness for the Nottingham fight. Ward's refusal to accept the venue may yet throw a spanner in the works of a potentially blockbuster matchup:
When the pair fought in the Super Six final in 2011, Ward won on unanimous decision, and the San Francisco-born fighter has fought just twice since then, remaining undefeated with a 27-0 professional record.
Froch's record stands at 33-2, but his career is surely drawing to a close.

The Cobra has various other potential targets—including Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.—and chief among them is Kazakh Gennady Golovkin.
James DeGale has been presented as a possibility, but Froch says he will only consider his compatriot if he beats Andre Dirrell in Chicago in May, per Jeff Powell in the Daily Mail:
"James has not yet proved himself for a fight with me but if he can beat Dirrell it would become more interesting for me to face him. But not before a big name fight this summer.
"
The undefeated Golovkin (32-0) meets American Willie Monroe Jr. in May, and should he win that fight, a potential clash with Froch would be some prospect.
The 32-year-old has won 29 of his fights via knockout, and Froch's promoter Eddie Hearn clearly regards him as a reputable opponent, per David Anderson in the Mirror: "I quite like the Ward fight and I also like the Golovkin fight because how much kudos do you get for fighting Golovkin?"
Though nothing is certain, it looks as though Froch may well return to the ring, whether it be against Ward or Golovkin, and British boxing fans will surely be eager to see him again after last May's triumph over George Groves.
However, there is still a long way to go, and Ward's refusal to fight in Nottingham may yet prove to be the sticking point for their meeting.
