WWE WrestleMania 2015: Matches Sure to Cause Controversy Among Fans

Chris RolingMar 29, 2015

Controversy, the defining buzzword surrounding WrestleMania 31.

It's not a bad thing. Controversy puts butts in seats and eyeballs in front of screens. Then again, the build to WrestleMania has perhaps more controversy than WWE ever anticipated.

Backlash continues to follow Roman Reigns' ascent. Ditto for Daniel Bryan's relegation to competing for the intercontinental title. Bray Wyatt getting a shot at The Undertaker writes itself, yet The Deadman has yet to show up. Sting-Triple H also writes itself, but the result of the match will prove decisive.

While a troubled journey, WrestleMania will at least entertain. There are controversial finishes every year. Remember last year when The Streak came to an end and John Cena took out Wyatt?

This year might just top it in the controversy department.

Surefire Controversial Matches

Sting vs. Triple H

Go ahead—figure out how this one ends and the ensuing consequences.

Say Triple H wins. Great, The Authority garners more heat than ever and continues to act as top villains. But they don't need the rub, and Sting losing ruins more than a decade-long wait to see him in action.

Say Sting wins. Sting's concern over The Authority is over while they go on to continue to wreak havoc at all levels.

There's no pleasing all fans with this one. The last hurrah of the WWE-WCW war offers closure but only to one side. It's a dream matchup and one most should just sit back and enjoy, but it's never so simple.

Regardless, it's hard to imagine Sting signed on just to take a loss on such a grand stage. Look for him to pick up the three count and perhaps turn his attention to another dream feud, one against The Undertaker.

Bray Wyatt vs. Undertaker

WWE would never allow Undertaker to lose two in a row at WrestleMania.

Wait a minute.

This path seems familiar. Just a year removed from a loss at the hands of Brock Lesnar, Undertaker is once again the main attraction of the event, despite never even showing up on a Raw to promote the match.

The thing is, this match is for Wyatt, not Undertaker. Wyatt needs the push, the rub to be the next supernatural freak who terrorizes the squared circle. He's the next Undertaker in the same way WWE seems to want Reigns to be the next Cena.

So while it may seem improbable Undertaker loses twice in a row, keep in mind he doesn't need a win. If he does, then gets involved in a feud with Sting or someone else for WrestleMania 32, he'll still be on the receiving end of the same amount of pre-show hype.

Bray Wyatt has done all the heavy lifting to this point. He's masterful with his character, on the mic and in the ring. Burying The Deadman (but not burdening him with snapping the streak) makes too much sense not to happen.

Of course, no matter which way it plays out, fans will debate the finale for years to come.

Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar

The sheer amount of possibilities makes the bout between Reigns and Lesnar both the most unpredictable and the surest to cause controversy in quite a long time.

Lesnar just re-upped with the company in a public manner on SportsCenter, something sure to win him over with fans. Meanwhile, mixed reviews continue to follow the inexperienced Reigns.

Of the many, many possibilities as to how things end, here are a few (with ensuing questions):

  • Lesnar retains (But who is the next believable threat?)
  • Reigns wins (But who does he feud with, and what happens to Lesnar?)
  • Swerve. Paul Heyman turns on Lesnar, Reigns wins (But who talks for Lesnar?)
  • Seth Rollins cashes in his briefcase (But who wins?)
  • The Authority interferes (But helps who?)
  • The Rock interferes (See point No. 2)
  • WWE goes all Michael Bay, The Shield comes down from a helicopter and helps Reigns win, the master plan all along (all right, not happening)

The point is, no matter how things shake out, there are going to be plenty of questions and mixed emotions.

In the eyes of some, Reigns is green and not worthy, but he's a full-time guy as opposed to Lesnar's part-time schedule. But Lesnar picked WWE over the UFC, which should win the hearts of fans, and his sporadic appearances make the belt and himself much more meaningful than the top title has felt in years.

Suffice it to say, being the person with the final call would be a stressful job. No matter how the call goes, it's one going down as one of the most controversial decisions in modern wrestling history.
