Breaking Down the Best and Worst of the WWE for Week of March 23

Ryan DilbertMar 27, 2015

The build for the Divas tag match at WrestleMania finally developed some bite, just days after the lead-up to the WWE title match featured a toothless would-be cliffhanger.

AJ Lee, Paige and The Bella Twins brought 10 times the intensity that Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar did. The women's match suddenly feels more interesting. The WrestleMania main event, however, will have to be great despite a lackluster go-home segment.

The week's other highs and lows saw Snoop Dogg get silly, NXT deliver yet again, and the tag team division get little love.

As excitement grows for WWE's biggest show of the year, the company mixed its bull's-eyes with its misfires. The following is a look at which matches and moments helped gets fans pumped for the future and which ones left folks shaking their heads.

Best: Fun with Snoop Dogg

1 of 5

Reaction was mixed for Bill Simmons' stint on commentary. His energy was minimal, but he clearly respected and was in awe of what unfolded in the ring. The other guest on Monday's Raw was more of a hit.

Snoop Dogg mixed it up with Curtis Axel in a goofy-but-fun segment that also starred Hulk Hogan.

The rapper looked as if he was loving being part of the show. The fun he had in the ring rubbed off on the audience.

His appearance allowed Axel's story of overconfidence and failure to continue, giving the go-home edition of Raw some added star power in the process.

WWE would be smart to create more confrontations like this for Axel. Just as Heath Slater had run-ins with former WWE stars leading up to Raw 1000, there's an opportunity to make Axel a noteworthy comedy character by clashing with a string of guest stars.

Worst: No Story for the Tag Team Division

2 of 5

Cesaro and Tyson Kidd are set to face three teams at WrestleMania. If the attention WWE has paid to this match pre-WrestleMania is any indication, the upcoming title bout is going to be forgettable fare.

There has been no narrative for the teams to work with. Yes, they all want tag team gold, but where's the animosity that we see between Randy Orton and Seth Rollins? Where are the subplots?

On Monday's Raw, WWE had the tag champs team with Natalya in a rematch against El Torito and Los Matadores. That match certainly felt like filler. It did little to advance the feud.

Other matches are getting vignettes, promos and big moments outside the ring. This bout is still waiting for its boost.

The Intercontinental Championship seems destined for a revival. The United States Championship is getting plenty of attention as well. It's the tag team straps that are getting left behind, afterthoughts made of leather and gold.

Best: Finn Balor and Kevin Owens, World-Class Storytellers

3 of 5

A pair of men destined to make an impact at future WrestleManias battled on Wednesday's NXT in one of the best matches in 2015.

A familiar story of resilient hero gutting it out through pain played out as Finn Balor challenged Kevin Owens for the NXT Championship. Both men deserve kudos here. Owens looked just as intimidating and predatory as he has since joining WWE. Balor played up his kayfabe knee injury beautifully.

The result was a bout that required some patience for the audience as it began slowly but paid off with a well-told in-ring narrative.

Both Balor and Owens are capable of just doling out an unending series of big moves. They instead chose to pace themselves, suck the audience in and leave them drained afterward.

Owens devoured Balor just as the Irishman looked close to a title win. The match serves as a precursor to WrestleMania, the bar set high for the stars on the main roster to follow.

Worst: Tug-of-War

4 of 5

Having Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar play "gimme, gimme!" with the WWE title is not the way to wrap up the build to WrestleMania's top match.

Even if WWE was intent on not having the two men brawl before Sunday, the company had a myriad of better options than the one it went with on Monday's Raw. The tug-of-war was silly, not intense.

Neither man looked better thanks to this. Just having the two guys stare at each other with snarls on their faces would have been an improvement.

Instead, the go-home edition of Raw ended with fans snickering.

If Reigns and Lesnar put on a tremendous show Sunday, the audience will forget this, though. To make sure of that, WWE would be smart to delete this clip from the archives.

Best: Divas Get Nasty

5 of 5

On a SmackDown with just two matches, it was the four women set to meet at WrestleMania who had people talking. They didn't need to hit a single clothesline.

The Divas tag match had no life. Sure, AJ Lee and Paige didn't get along, and that added some depth to the story, but there was no reason to get excited about this clash. It felt like something WWE cared little about.

AJ, Paige and The Bella Twins did their best to change that.

Nikki called out AJ for not being around for much of the year. Paige and AJ called themselves "real women." The word "bitch" got thrown in there as well.

There was a ferocity here that we had yet to see between these rivals. It was enough to leave one wondering if there was some backstage tension triggering some of these insults. That's when you know something in wrestling is working, when fans question whether it's scripted.

There's no telling how much time WWE is going to allot to this match, but there's suddenly more reason to look forward to it.
