Brock Lesnar Re-Signing, Sting and More from the WrestleMania Mailbag

Alfred KonuwaMar 26, 2015

For an entire year, Paul Heyman told anybody who listened that Brock Lesnar is a conqueror. After publicly re-signing with WWE, he will walk into Santa Clara as a conquering hero.

"

@ThisIsNasty When does Brock turn face? There's no precedent for such a non-cheating heel run. Or is he just the Beast neither heel or face?

— Alandres_Cal (@_NESNY) March 26, 2015"

Now. Like, right now. Whether WWE realizes it or not, Lesnar will be the biggest babyface in Levi's Stadium come Sunday. It wasn't a slimy dirt sheet that broke the news of Lesnar's re-signing. This came straight form the hoss' mouth. Lesnar went on mainstream ESPN programming and announced he was staying.

In a time where Vince McMahon is losing big stars to MMA, this is WWE's version of LeBron James telling Cleveland he's coming home.

This puts the icing on the cake of one of the most organic babyface turns in history. Lesnar wins his matches clean. He dominates. He obliterated John Cena. What's not to love? Lesnar is still a heel by default, but he'll be the most cheered heel in a main event of WrestleMania since Triple H in WrestleMania 22. Maybe even since Hollywood Hogan at WrestleMania 18.

The recent developments add a fresh coat of unpredictability to the WrestleMania main event. There's no telling which direction WWE goes, but Lesnar retaining is the popular choice.

"

@ThisIsNasty does Brock Lesnar re-signing guarantee a Reigns loss? And who's the best option to win the ladder match? #Mailbag

— Prettier Than Breeze (@ThyDeanAmbrose) March 25, 2015"

Lesnar re-signing with WWE does not guarantee a Reigns loss, but Reigns is far from the sure thing he seemed to be in July. WWE failed to create a connection between Reigns and the fans when they were presented with a golden opportunity during his hernia injury. Instead of training videos and even showing a vulnerable side to Reigns as he looks to keep his spot, WWE opted to go with awkward, robotic scripted promos.

Reigns is ready for the big time, maybe even as a heel. But Lesnar retaining the WWE World Heavyweight Championship is the most likely outcome at this point.

As far as the ladder match is concerned, the best outcome is Daniel Bryan winning the Intercontinental Championship. Bryan is arguably the most over WWE Superstar on the roster, and if WWE takes him seriously as an Intercontinental Champion, he'll be a valuable fighting champion the way Booker T was when he held the Television title in WCW.

Bryan took back-to-back clean losses to Dolph Ziggler on television. Based on WWE's traditional even-steven booking, this makes him the de facto favorite to win the Intercontinental Championship ladder match.

The key to anybody winning the Intercontinental Championship is not only to defend it, but to disqualify suitors who want the title. Tournaments, qualifying matches and Battle Royals will help make that division a meritocracy.

"

@ThisIsNasty How does Brock Lesnar resigning affect Seth Rollins cashing in MITB? #WrestleMania #MailbagQuestionOfTheCench

— bircheezy (@bircheezy) March 25, 2015"

Seth Rollins cashing in is most likely if Reigns is penciled in as the winner. If Lesnar is going to retain, Rollins will probably hold on to the Money in the Bank briefcase for a bit longer. People seem to think WrestleMania is the deadline for Rollins to cash in. Remember, he still has four months.

WWE would be wise to hold off until the summer, when they're in need of a good storyline to spice up their annually lethargic summer programming.

There are enough storylines during WWE's hottest period of the year to captivate an audience. Throwing in a monumental Money in the Bank cash-in would just be overkill. WrestleMania brings in a meta audience that would cheer Rollins heavily if he cashed in his Money in the Bank. Rollins is a top heel in the company who is typically booed by live audiences.

If he is cheered during the biggest moment of his career, however, it will slow down the momentum he has as a heel.

"

@ThisIsNasty Is Sting one and done? Last match sure, but how about GM or some other role?

— V (@MrVDawg) March 26, 2015"

Hopefully not. WWE is doing a good job spreading out his appearances and keeping him novel. Fans are going to be way into his WWE debut. He obviously shouldn't be a full-time competitor, but there are a handful of matches that could draw viewers and elevate young stars.

If Bray Wyatt beats Undertaker and at least gets a match against Sting, he would never have to worry about competing in a midcard WrestleMania Battle Royal.

Sting vs. Undertaker has long since been a dream match. This could be teased as early as the Raw after WrestleMania if Undertaker questions himself following an improbable loss to Wyatt.

Sting as a GM would be an abject nightmare. At this point in his career, Sting is best used as a special attraction where every appearance means something. If he kicks off Raw every week with a cheesy promo to go along with even cheesier backstage vignettes, his lucrative mystique will die.

"

@ThisIsNasty Which superstars appearing at this year's WrestleMania won't be around by WrestleMania 32? #FutureEndeavoured

— Jed Bennett (@JedsWorld) March 25, 2015"

I'm not into fantasy firing anybody, so let's rephrase this question to, "Who's in danger of being in WWE's vaunted midcard next year?"

My answer? Bray Wyatt and Rusev. We've seen this movie far too many times. A midcarder is on the precipice of the main event only to lose a big match. WWE has protected Rusev and Wyatt brilliantly, but now they're walking into the biggest matches of their careers.

Rusev winning is not as important as Wyatt winning. Wyatt claims to be the New Face of Fear, but he will be exposed as a fraud if he loses to the Undertaker. Rusev's unbeaten streak gives him some room for error if he loses to Cena, but if he beats Cena he'll be solidified as a main eventer.

WWE has an internal problem of establishing a credible midcard. Time was, the midcard was filled with workhorses, some of whom advanced past the midcard into the main event and stayed there. Now, the midcard is filled with false idols who were discarded after failing to remain afloat at the top of the roster.

Look at Ziggler. Look at Bad News Barrett. Look at Dean Ambrose. Look at Stardust. Look at Sheamus. Look at Ryback. Look at Bryan.

If Wyatt and Rusev both lose at WrestleMania, who's to say they won't join WWE's wasteland one year later?
