Settlement Reached in Roger Clemens' Defamation Lawsuit

A defamation lawsuit filed by Brian McNamee against former Cy Young winner Roger Clemens was settled out of court Wednesday.

According to Jake Pearson of The Associated Press, McNamee will receive an undisclosed fee from Clemens' insurer. The 11-time All-Star will not be forced to offer any financial compensation to McNamee, who was Clemens' longtime trainer late in his big league career.

"At this point it's water over the dam," McNamee's attorney, Richard Emery, said. "It's high time. This is old news these days."

McNamee originally filed the suit in 2008, claiming Clemens defamed his name when he denied McNamee provided him with performance-enhancing drugs. The former trainer for Clemens and Andy Pettitte had claimed he injected Clemens with anabolic steroids and HGH from 1998 to 2001. Clemens has steadfastly denied those claims, and the terms of the settlement include no implication of wrongdoing on his part.

"I was not present, nor would I have participated in paying one dime," Clemens said in a text message to Fox 26 Sports. "Everyone knows my stance on the subject."

Clemens, 52, retired from baseball following the 2007 season. He has failed to receive a plaque in the Baseball Hall of Fame amid McNamee's allegations and subsequent investigations into his PED use.
