WWE Should Save Sheamus' Return Until After WrestleMania 31

Donald WoodMar 12, 2015

The WWE has been teasing the return of former world champion Sheamus for several weeks, but with only two episodes of Raw remaining before WrestleMania 31, the company would be smart to keep him off of television until after the biggest pay-per-view of the year.

Despite rumors from PWIndsider.com (via WrestleZone.com) that Sheamus could be booked to return during the WrestleMania event, saving him for Raw the following night would be a great way to begin the next chapter of WWE's story.

For one, there are just over two weeks remaining before the PPV, and any match Sheamus would be added to now would feel forced. A singles bout is out of the question this close to the show due to the inability to build any kind of story. WWE has enough trouble building a proper angle with a month of preparation, and the fans have no faith the company could develop something interesting in just two weeks.

On the other hand, a last-second addition to the Intercontinental Championship Ladder match or the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal would mean the weeks of vignettes were in vain. Being thrown in multiman bouts wouldn’t help his character unless he was positioned to dominate the field and walk away victorious. With stars and storylines deserving more attention right now, a Sheamus return would be ill-timed.

If the WWE is focused on making Sheamus’ return feel like a big deal, the company must follow through and wait until he can make the biggest impact possible.

After WrestleMania 31 concludes, there is a good chance that the WWE Universe could go several months or longer before seeing The Undertaker, Sting, Triple H and Brock Lesnar in a wrestling role again. With so many losses at the top of the card, the company would need a marquee return, and Sheamus is the correct answer.

The perfect storyline would be a singles feud with Daniel Bryan. Sheamus has been boring as a top face, and with the main event scene stacked with good guys and lacking elite heels, this should be the Celtic Warrior’s time to turn.

With The Authority coming apart at the seams, adding a new enforcer like Sheamus, who can be billed as an unstoppable force and fans would buy it, the WWE could give Bryan a marquee singles feud while reigniting the overarching battle between Triple H and Bryan.

Sheamus is one of the most talented in-ring workers fans will ever see for a guy his size, and he can be serviceable on the mic when given the time and the leash to be creative. As a top heel returning after WrestleMania, the Irish Superstar could become a main focus of the company.

If Brock returns to the UFC, Sheamus could easily be booked as the top heel in the company.
