Shawn Porter vs. Roberto Garcia: Fight Time, Date, Live Stream and TV Info

Brian MaziqueMar 11, 2015

Shawn "Showtime" Porter (24-1-1, 15 KO) suffered his first professional loss in his last fight, but confidence doesn't appear to be a problem for the former IBF welterweight champion as he prepares to face Roberto Garcia (36-3, 23 KO) on Friday night in Ontario, California.

During the pre-fight media conference call, Porter said, "There's going to be a lot of fast stuff, and a lot of quick stuff and a lot of powerful stuff. You're going to get it all from 'Showtime' Shawn Porter for this fight."

This is the Ohio native's first bout since losing his 147-pound title to Kell Brook in a majority decision in August 2014.

The rugged Garcia has won eight straight fights and desperately wants to run his streak to nine. Gaining a win over an ex-champion and a respected fighter in Porter would be the biggest win of Garcia's career.

The Porter-Garcia bout will set the stage for the evening's main event, in which Andre Berto takes on Josesito Lopez.

This is the second Premier Boxing Champions event, and the first was a rousing success. Per information provided by PBC representatives, Saturday's card, which featured Adrien "The Problem" Broner vs. John Molina and Keith "One Time" Thurman vs. Robert Guerrero, was the most-watched boxing event since 1998.

PBC can only hope this card is as commercially successful. Here's a look at the viewing info.

When: Friday, March 13 at 9 p.m. ET

Where: Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California

TV: Spike TV

Live Stream: Spike Online

Grizzled and Hungry

The 33-year-old Garcia has never won a world title, but he is as tough as they come. In his 14-year professional career, he has never been stopped.

The last time he lost was in May 2010 against Antonio Margarito. Garcia was down once in that fight and in his last bout against Breidis Prescott. Until now, Garcia has been down but never out.

On Friday, Garcia will face a fighter with whom he's familiar. He and Porter have sparred with each other, but Garcia insists those sessions will be nothing like what transpires Friday.

During the pre-fight conference call, Garcia said this about the upcoming bout: "Shawn and I have been sparring together, but I've been boxing him as a friend. On Friday, I'm not going to get in there as his friend. I don't even know him anymore. He's just another guy in front of me that I've got to take care of, and I'm going in there to do my job and to make it better for my family."

Garcia understands how big of an opportunity this fight will be for him. His tone of voice during the conference call seemed to denote calmness and poise, but he seems eager to make a statement.

Something tells me he won't have to come and find Porter.

Eager for Another Title Shot

The taste of championship gold was a sweet one for Porter. You can bet he wants more after his short reign with the title.

Porter is an excellent athlete who is still learning his craft in many ways. The 27-year-old has come a long way since the first time I saw him compete. For example, when Porter beat Alfonso Gomez in 2012, he seemed to smother his punches, which negated some of his punching power.

Until he was handled by Brook, Porter had been showing consistent improvement. It's possible Porter also gained some valuable experience in the loss to Brook. Porter isn't necessarily looking beyond Garcia, but it seems he may be playing into talk about his next bout.

After Thurman scored a unanimous-decision win, Porter talked about wanting to face One Time. Porter says in the interview below with Tha Boxing Voice that took place after Thurman's victory that the fight will happen.

With both men under the PBC umbrella, it seems like a natural fit. Before Porter can turn his attention to Thurman or anyone else, he has to prove he can pass the stiff test Garcia will bring.

Prediction

While Garcia is tough and experienced, he lacks the foot and hand speed to dictate the tempo. Porter will win a lopsided decision.
