LaMarr Woodley to Cardinals: Latest Contract Details and Reaction

Tyler ConwayMar 10, 2015

LaMarr Woodley is set to become the latest former Steeler to join head coach Bruce Arians in Arizona. The free-agent linebacker and the Cardinals agreed to a one-year, $870,000 contract Tuesday that the team hopes will resurrect the former Pro Bowler's career.

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic noted the terms of the deal, and Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo and Peter Schrager reported the news:

The team later confirmed the news of the signing.

Woodley, 30, spent the 2014 season with the Oakland Raiders. He was limited to six games with a torn biceps, finishing with five tackles and failing to record a sack for the first time in his career. The former Michigan standout spent his first seven seasons in Pittsburgh, bursting onto the scene as an aggressive pass-rusher before injuries halted his prime.

Signing with Arizona is a natural extension of the continued second chances given to Steelers players under Arians. Larry Foote, Rashard Mendenhall, Jonathan Dwyer and a number of others have landed in Arizona over the last two seasons, using their connections with Arians as a refuge. Arians served as an assistant coach with the Steelers from 2004 to 2011.

In Woodley, Arians lands a former Steeler who is four years removed from being an effective player. After compiling a combined 44 sacks from 2008 to 2011, he has made just nine sacks the last three seasons. He has also not played a 16-game campaign since 2010.

That said, the risk here is nonexistent. The Cardinals could cut Woodley in training camp without so much as blinking, and their linebacking corps will not be dependent on him being a star. The team is widely expected to finalize a contract with free agent Sean Weatherspoon, per Somers. Adding both players continues a team-wide trend of buying low on formerly effective linebackers and hoping they work out. Foote and Karlos Dansby have each had success in Arizona after their careers seemed over before arriving.

Perhaps Woodley can be next in line. If not, it's unlikely to make much of a difference either way.
