Last-Minute Guide to San Francisco 49ers' Free Agency

Peter PanacyMar 9, 2015

A tumultuous offseason continues to grow as the San Francisco 49ers stand on the brink of the free-agency period.

Tuesday, March 10 marks the start when other NFL teams can start official negotiations with free agents. The 49ers are one such team that is poised to lose a number of free-agent players.

Significant ones.

Some players are assumed to be on the way out. Wide receiver Michael Crabtree could depart as could left guard Mike Iupati. Other notable free agents like linebacker Dan Skuta and Chris Culliver might have new homes in 2015.

And then there is running back Frank Gore.

Gore—San Francisco's all-time rushing leader—might have played his final game in a 49ers uniform.

Yet this is the nature of football. Players come and go, and nothing is guaranteed to last forever.

To handle this, general manager Trent Baalke and the 49ers have made attempts to rectify some of the pending situations the 49ers will encounter if, and when, such players depart.

With free agency on the horizon, let's break down a last-minute look at what San Francisco is facing and what is being done to shape up the team in 2015.

New Additions

1 of 6

The 49ers have already made a few moves to address some potential needs in 2015.

Chief among these transactions was the free-agent signing of veteran defensive tackle Darnell Dockett.

Dockett inked a two-year, $7.5 million deal with the 49ers per Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.

The signing solves some mystery behind a questionable defensive line in 2015. With defensive end Ray McDonald gone after an alleged sexual-assault case last season, the 49ers will at least have a little more veteran depth up front.

It also, potentially, addresses the possible retirement of 35-year-old defensive end Justin Smith.

Dockett missed all of 2014 with an injury suffered during training camp that year. Prior to that, the three-time Pro Bowler registered 40.5 sacks and 349 tackles.

Another noteworthy signing was the acquisition of wide receiver Jerome Simpson.

Simpson, a six-year veteran, did not play last season due to a number of off-the-field issues and being cut by the Minnesota Vikings

While the 29-year-old wideout has talent, the off-the-field concerns do raise some eyebrows in the wake of what has already been a turbulent few months in San Francisco.

Simpson's signing apparently created some questions within the front office, per Ann Killion of the San Francisco Chronicle—especially general manager Trent Baalke and CEO Jed York:

"

Asked Jed York about 49ers signing thrice-arrested Jerome Simpson. He said "You have to ask Trent. I don't know what the thinking was."

— Ann Killion (@annkillion) March 6, 2015"

Whatever the concerns may be, Simpson to San Francisco at least provides some depth to a wide receiver position that will likely lose targets like Michael Crabtree and Brandon Lloyd.

The 49ers also added British rugby star Jarryd Hayne as a developmental piece.

Could WR Torrey Smith Save an Anemic Passing Game?

The 49ers are reportedly locked in on free-agent wide receiver Torrey Smith.
The 49ers are reportedly locked in on free-agent wide receiver Torrey Smith.

Common speculation would suggest that the 49ers would target an impact, speedy wide receiver in Round 1 of the 2015 NFL draft.

Feasibly, they still could search for a long-term option at this position via the draft. But the possible acquisition of former Baltimore Ravens wideout Torrey Smith could shake that up a bit.

According to Adam Caplan of ESPN, San Francisco is seeking Smith's services in 2015.

"

Multiple league sources say #49ers are very interested in Torrey Smith. Again, they need a deep threat WR--he's it.

— Adam Caplan (@caplannfl) March 8, 2015"

Smith, who has 213 career receptions for 3,591 yards and 30 touchdowns over four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, could bring that speed element that the 49ers are so desperately seeking. It would also allow general manager Trent Baalke to focus on other needs in the draft should the franchise view Smith as its immediate solution here.

According to a source that reported to the Baltimore Sun (h/t Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area), Smith signing with the 49ers is a "done deal."

Smith would join former teammate Anquan Boldin in 2015 and add immediate veteran presence for a passing game that ranked No. 30 in the NFL last season with 3,063 yards.

LB Dan Skuta Poised to Sign Deal with Jacksonville Jaguars

Linebacker Dan Skuta performed well above expectations during two seasons in San Francisco.
Linebacker Dan Skuta performed well above expectations during two seasons in San Francisco.

Outside linebacker Dan Skuta certainly earned his stripes with the 49ers in 2014.

Signed as a special teams and backup player in 2013, the 28-year-old veteran made huge strides filling in for a depleted linebacker corps last season. With fellow linebacker Aldon Smith serving a nine-game suspension in 2014, Skuta received the majority of the snaps in his stead.

During that stretch, Skuta recorded 25 tackles, three forced fumbles and five sacks—all career highs.

Bringing Skuta back in 2015 would have been nice, but he will certainly be earning more than the two-year, $3 million contract he received in San Francisco.

According to Adam Caplan of ESPN, the Jacksonville Jaguars are in line to sign Skuta to a new contract.

"

When free agency opens up on Tuesday after 4:00 pm ET, the #Jaguars are expected to sign LB Dan Skuta, per league source.

— Adam Caplan (@caplannfl) March 10, 2015"

The deal is reportedly worth five years at $20.5 million per Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.

Skuta paid off for the 49ers. And it's certain they will miss his services and the depth he provided at this position. Yet San Francisco will largely rely on the tandem of Smith and second-year linebacker Aaron Lynch on the outside.

Third-year pro Corey Lemonier will also have a shot to redeem himself after two underwhelming seasons with the 49ers.

OG Mike Iupati Staying in the NFC West?

4 of 6

The 49ers may have picked off defensive tackle Darnell Dockett from the Arizona Cardinals, but it looks as if the Cardinals will strike back by landing offensive guard Mike Iupati.

Iupati, in reality, would never return to San Francisco. His contractual price would have been too much for a 49ers team with some cap troubles prior to free agency. While they now stand at $21,532,714 according to Over the Cap, Iupati will certainly command one of the biggest contracts for a player at his position.

NFL Media's Albert Breer (h/t Chris Wesseling of NFL.com) reported the pending transaction on March 9.

"

— NFL (@nfl) March 9, 2015"

Iupati has spent all five years of his career with the 49ers—a stretch that included three Pro Bowl nominations and one selection as an All-Pro for the former first rounder.

Yet the 49ers have, at least in theory, a plan to replace the venerable offensive guard.

Center Marcus Martin can shift over to guard with the eventual return of fellow center Daniel Kilgore (leg) to his starting position. San Francisco also has second-year pro Brandon Thomas, who was redshirted last year, to compete for the first team.

But the 49ers might also look to address this need in the upcoming draft.

Patrick Willis and Justin Smith: End of an Era in San Francisco?

5 of 6

An end of an era could be looming in San Francisco.

Veteran defensive end Justin Smith has been hinting at retirement for months. According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee (h/t Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area), Smith isn't 100 percent set on retirement.

“I’m going to decide by next week probably,” Smith told Barrows on Monday. “So you’ll know by then. It’s not 100 percent.”

But the bigger news was the pending retirement of perennial Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis.

Willis is expected to announce the end of his storied career soon, according to Rand Getlin of Yahoo! Sports.

The recent toe injury that sidelined Willis for over half of last season certainly plays a significant role in his pending decision. But Willis has also hinted that he wants to do more off-the-field work at this point in his life, per Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports.

Additionally, Willis has made hints towards this decision on his Whosay.com account (h/t Vincent Frank of Forbes):

"

— Vincent Frank (@VincentFrankNFL) March 10, 2015"

There isn't much positive that can come from this possibility. Losing Willis to retirement is more than just a big hurdle to overcome. The standout defender holds the identity of the defense, and arguably the team, in his hands.

If there is a good element to this, San Francisco will at least be able to employ the talented second-year linebacker Chris Borland back into a starting role.

RB Frank Gore Hasn't Decided Where He'll Play Just Yet

6 of 6

Veteran running back Frank Gore finished his 2014 with a splash.

In Week 17 of the season, Gore crested the 10,000 yards-rushing plateau and netted over 1,000 yards for the eighth time of his storied career.

Yet, like it or not, Gore's future with the 49ers was in doubt long before these lofty accolades were reached.

San Francisco will eventually have to turn over the reins to someone younger and cheaper. It didn't happen last year even after the 49ers drafted former Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde in the second round.

But Hyde could be the No. 1 back in San Francisco during the 2015 season. Or it could be another target—either via the draft or through free agency as described in the video above.

Gore has been linked to both the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles in recent reports. But Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reported that Gore is leaning heavily towards the former after initially suggesting a deal in place with Philadelphia:

"

Gore and the Colts had mutual interest in the early portion of the free-agent negotiating window, sources told CSNBayArea.com. But Gore initially decided to sign a reported three-year contract with the Eagles that averaged $5 million per season and included $7.5 million guaranteed in the first two seasons.

"

The 49ers front office had made strides to retain Gore's services, per Maiocco. But it does not appear as if the five-time Pro Bowler will be wearing red and gold in 2015.
