Hassan Whiteside Grabs 25 Rebounds for 2nd-Highest Total in Heat History
Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside grabbed 25 boards in Wednesday's 100-94 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, marking the second-highest single-game rebounding total in franchise history, per ESPN Stats & Info.
The 25-year-old breakout star also managed 18 points and four blocks over 33 minutes in the close victory, though he did turn the ball over four times, matching his highest total of both the season and his career.
Now averaging 11.1 points, 10.1 boards and 2.5 blocks over just 22.1 minutes per game this season, Whiteside has reached 20 rebounds in a game on four separate occasions, including two performances with exactly 24.
The Heat single-game record for rebounds is held by Rony Seikaly, who incredibly grabbed 34 in a March 1993 victory over the Washington Bullets, per Basketball-Reference.com's play index.
Despite playing just 33 games in a Miami uniform thus far, Whiteside accounts for three of the six performances of 24-plus rebounds in franchise history.
Arguably the most surprising star player in recent NBA history, Whiteside entered the 2014-15 season having last played in the NBA in 2011-12, when he averaged just 6.1 minutes in 18 appearances for the Sacramento Kings.
While the Kings obviously have a superstar center of their own, the team probably wishes it had given Whiteside—its second-round pick in the 2010 draft—a bit more time to develop.
Sacramento's loss is Miami's gain, and the Heat will need all the help they can get up front with Chris Bosh out for the season due to blood clots on his lung.
