Giants, Shane Vereen Reportedly Agree to Terms

Tuesday, March 10

FOX Sports' Mike Garafolo reported that Vereen and the Giants have agreed to a contract, while Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reported that the contract is for four years and $16 million.

NJ.com's Jordan Raanan first noted that the Giants were seeking a running back who can catch the ball well. Roy Helu Jr. and Antone Smith, who played in Washington and Atlanta last year, respectively, were mentioned as specific options New York is pursuing.

As deep as this running back class is perceived to be, rookies have a steep learning curve in terms of grasping the playbook and especially catching on in pass protection. First-year tailbacks aren't guaranteed to make an impact, and New York wouldn't add one until later in the draft.

Adding a veteran like Vereen makes sense, considering the Giants already have a young runner in Williams and a potential feature back in Jennings.

Report: New York Contacts Dan Williams

Saturday, March 7

Dan Graziano of ESPN reports that the Giants have reached out to former Arizona Cardinals standout Dan Williams:

Although the current personnel suggests New York will play in a 4-3 alignment, the typical nose tackle Williams is athletic enough to play inside and start. Williams can clog running lanes with his huge frame, which is where the Giants defense needs to improve most.

As opposed to spending a boatload on someone like Ndamukong Suh, New York could land Williams at a relative bargain and utilize money elsewhere.
