Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union reported that Idzik's main responsibilities with the Jaguars will be mostly related to finances:

Idzik has been working in an NFL front office since 1993 when he was first hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His most high-profile job was as general manager of the New York Jets for two years from 2013 to 2014.

Following a 4-12 season in 2014, the Jets cleaned house by firing Idzik and head coach Rex Ryan. Idzik endured his share of criticism in New York, including multiple instances where a "Fire John Idzik" banner flew over team practices.

Even though Idzik warranted some criticism, even when it was because he didn't spend enough on free agents, Jared Dubin of CBS Sports did point out there were some positive developments under his watch:

"

It's inarguably that Idzik leaves the Jets with more offensive talent than when he got there. The 2012 Jets ended the season with Shonn Greene as their leading rusher, and a pass-catching group of Jeremy KerleyJeff Cumberland, Stephen Hill, Chaz Schilens, Dustin Keller and the ghosts of Santonio Holmes, of Braylon Edwards.

"

Idzik's ability to manage the salary cap for the Jets, helped by the fact he didn't dive deep into the free-agent pool despite having room to do so last year, seems to make him ideally suited for what the Jaguars need.

Jacksonville is still a young and rebuilding franchise that doesn't have any immediate or long-term cap issues to worry about. Idzik will be able to work with general manager David Caldwell to determine how to best add talent without mortgaging that flexibility.

Just because Idzik's tenure as a general manager didn't work out doesn't mean he can't be a successful personnel man in the NFL. He worked with the Buccaneers when they won a Super Bowl in 2002 and was in Seattle (2007 to 2012) during the renaissance that has happened there.
