Jackson Dealt to Pistons
Thursday, Feb. 19
The Pistons confirmed they have acquired Jackson from the Thunder, per a team press release:
"The Detroit Pistons announced today that the team has acquired guard Reggie Jackson from Oklahoma City as part of a three-team trade that sent guard DJ Augustin, forward Kyle Singler and a 2019 second round draft selection to the Thunder. The team also sent a 2017 second round draft selection to the Utah Jazz.
"
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports first reported the news.
Jackson commented on the news, via his Twitter account:
Jackson was one of the hottest names at the trade deadline this year. Earlier in the day, Wojnarowski reported the Pistons, Indiana Pacers and Utah Jazz all inquired about Jackson's availability.
Prior to that, Jackson had been linked to a deal with the Brooklyn Nets, as Wojnarowski noted the Nets were interested in Jackson as part of a deal for Brook Lopez, provided the guard signs a long-term deal in Brooklyn.
Jackson's Agent Asks For Trade
Wednesday, Feb. 18
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, Jackson's agent has asked the Thunder front office to deal his client before the trade deadline:
"The agent for Oklahoma City guard Reggie Jackson has asked general manager Sam Presti to trade his client before Thursday’s NBA deadline, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
CAA’s Aaron Mintz made the request in the past seven to 10 days, and several teams around the league became aware as officials probed for information on potentially dealing for Jackson, league sources said.
"
The relationship between Jackson and the Thunder has been fragile for a long time. He's 24 years old and wants to be a starter, though that's hard to do in Oklahoma City with point guard Russell Westbrook ahead of him on the depth chart.
Jackson was asked about his future in Oklahoma City on Wednesday, via Royce Young of ESPN:
In November, Darnell Mayberry of The Oklahoman reported that Jackson was telling people during a shootaround that he was “just trying to play my role while I’m here.”
The Thunder are half of a game behind the Phoenix Suns for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, so trading a valuable bench piece who averages 12.8 points and 4.2 assists per game could hurt their chances of making the playoffs this year.
Sometimes, though, the player's unhappiness can have a negative effect on the rest of the team. Oklahoma City just has to figure out if Jackson's desire to leave outweighs his value on the floor for the rest of this season.
