Who is the Yankees' 2009 MVP? Choosing Just One is a Job in Itself

Christopher Lane IIAug 15, 2009

It is that time of the year once again! Now that the 2009 MLB season is rapidly inching closer to its finish, the MVP debates have become a popular topic. The list grows with each day, and each heroic effort by the big name players.

However, the most interesting debate comes from the American League.

In particular, the American League East.

To curb all curiosity, I am referring to those damn New York Yankees.

This team has had more fun and more players smiling this year than all of its previous years of existence. The Yankees have been strictly business and all about winning for as long as they have been in Major League Baseball; however, the difference this year is the team is having fun while playing great baseball.

Obviously, it is always more fun to be successful at what your profession, but this team looks like they can't sleep each night in anticipation for the upcoming game.

Every game, each player shows up to the ballpark ready to work and stay focused, yet at the same time they truly enjoy what they are doing, and who they are doing it with.

The Yankees have numerous players who have been dubbed their "MVP" for this season so far. The question is; how can you pick one player?

Key additions this year have been the big names of Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, and A.J. Burnett, of course. But some of the other key new players have been the Nick Swishers and Alfredo Aceves (he had only six appearances in 2008 for the Yankees).

The bullpen improves day in and day out. Phil Hughes, the MVP in many fans' opinion, and Aceves shut down teams game after game, leaving it into the hands of one of the greatest closers of all-time, Mariano Rivera.

Jorge Posada and Jose Molina continually share time and they both stay productive on the days they play. They make each other better by giving each other much needed rest.

Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera have made each other better through competition, yet show support for each other to truly succeed each game. Even though Gardner is on the DL, Melky continues to carry the load, and Gardner is happy for his teammate.

Johnny Damon has stepped up in the latter stages of his career, and having a great offensive year. Swisher has had his ups and downs, yet always brings a fun dynamic to each game and is a great clubhouse guy.

Robinson Cano has rebounded after a dismal 2008 campaign. Derek Jeter is having one of the best defensive years of his career after much criticism this past offseason for his lack of range.

Alex Rodriguez continues to improve his concept of "team over me" and looks at home for the first time since his early years in Seattle. As expected by many fans, Teixeira has become the Don Mattingly or Tino Martinez of the 21st Century.

In recent weeks every Yankee starter looks like an ace, with the exception of Mitre who is still getting the job done in his comeback process.

And it seems as though Joe Girardi has gone from the hot seat to the driver’s seat. It even looks like his graying hair is looking full of life in the past month.

You can take your pick who deserves to be their MVP; however, there is no right or wrong answer. Every player has a case to be considered, every player has brought a dynamic to the team which cannot be replaced.

The Yankees have figured out how the stay focused, win ballgames, please the fans and front office, and have fun all at the same time. That is a dangerous club if I have ever heard of one.

Bleacher Report writer Adam Bernacchio recently wrote that the 2009 Yankees'  bullpen was like "a Corona without the lime."

Judging by the fun they are having this season as compared to others, the Yankees have been Corona for awhile, but this past offseason they added just enough lime for the whole team.
