John Cena Winning US Title at WWE Fastlane Is the Right Move

The Doctor Chris MuellerFeb 18, 2015

What do Ric Flair, Big Show, Rey Mysterio and Chris Jericho all have in common? They all won midcard titles after already holding several WWE World Championships.

Fans have been yearning for better Intercontinental and United States Championship reigns that will reinvigorate those divisions, and the answer could be taking a former world champion and using him to make the belts look more important.

Enter John Cena. His upcoming match with Rusev at WWE Fastlane on Sunday is looked at as the first major threat to the Bulgarian Brute's undefeated streak, and rightfully so.

Cena has overcome just about every challenge that he has ever come across, and after 15 reigns as WWE and world champion, there's not much left for him to accomplish.

This puts him in the position to be the veteran who helps the younger generation find its place among the legends who have populated this business for the last few decades.

By putting the U.S. title on Cena, not only would it give the belt a bit more prestige, but it would allow younger stars to have the chance to feud with someone who is usually looked at as being way above their current place on the card.

Just by feuding with Cena, Rusev has already climbed a few of those all important rungs on the ladder to success. Even if he loses at Fastlane, he will still be viewed as someone worthy of a match with a top star.

Once Cena has the title in his grasp, he can use his position as champion to bring other Superstars into the spotlight.

Imagine the kind of program a guy like Dean Ambrose could have with Cena. Ambrose's first reign with the belt was mostly a flop because WWE never booked him to defend it, as he was always busy handling business for The Shield.

Now that he is a lone wolf, Ambrose could do great things in a U.S. title feud with Cena. If Cena were to put him over, it would help Ambrose reach that next level.

Then there are guys like Cesaro, Stardust and a handful of other names who would all be able to benefit greatly from a title feud with Cenaeven if they come up short in the end.

The thing a lot of wrestling fans don't realize is that you don't always have to come away from a storyline victorious to gain some momentum from it. All you have to do is interact with a certain person to get the boost in exposure.

Aside from putting him in a position to help the younger talent in the company, becoming U.S. champion would help Cena, too.

This is a man who has been at the top of the food chain in WWE for roughly a decade. If WWE management isn't willing to turn him heel to freshen up his character, perhaps the best option is to bring him down a few notches so he can work his way back up.

Beating Cena would certainly make Rusev look like a major threat to everyone in WWE, but having Cena win the title would be far more beneficial to everyone in the long run.

What do you think? Should Cena win the U.S. title from Rusev at Fastlane?
