Michigan Football: Tracking 2015 NFL Combine Results for Former Wolverines Stars
Devin Funchess, Jake Ryan and Frank Clark are getting closer to a shot at the NFL by the day. But before the former Michigan standouts take the next step in their careers, they’ll have to run, jump and lift during the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine this week in Indianapolis.
According to the combine’s site, receivers, quarterbacks and running backs arrived on Wednesday and wrap up on Saturday. So that covers Funchess, a 6’5”, 230-pound wideout with early-round potential.
Defensive linemen and linebackers are set to arrive Thursday and finish on Sunday. That covers Jake Ryan, a linebacker with mid-round potential, and Frank Clark, a defensive end with late, late-round potential.
Follow this tracker for the latest updates and news as Funchess, Ryan and Clark attempt to bench, shuttle, dash and vertically leap their way onto a NFL franchise’s draft board. The combine goes all week, so check back frequently to get up to speed.
Devin Funchess
1 of 3
UPDATE: Feb. 21, 2015 (5:14 p.m.):
According to his NFL combine profile, Devin Funchess posted a broad jump of 122" and a vertical leap of 38.5". When compared to other receivers, his marks are among the best in each respective discipline.
Results for the shuttle runs have yet to be published on the NFL site.
UPDATE: Feb. 21, 2015 (11:24 a.m.):
According to the NFL.com combine tracker, Devin Funchess ran a 4.7-second 40-yard dash (unofficial time) and benched 225 pounds 17 times.
UPDATE: Feb. 20, 2015 (2:25 p.m.):
Devin Funchess cracked a joke about doctors at the combine that was worthy of inclusion (via ClevelandBrowns.com):
""Even if there's nothing wrong with you, they're going to try to find something."
"
UPDATE: Feb. 19, 2015 (3:18 pm.):
Reporting from the combine, Kyle Meinke of MLive recently caught up with Devin Funchess. Factoid: Meinke covered Michigan prior to moving onto the Lions beat, and he tweeted the following on Thursday.
"Devin Funchess at the combine: "I got sneaky speed."
"
UPDATE: Feb. 19, 2015 (12:45 p.m.):
According to college and NFL football writer Bryan Fischer, who is at the combine, Devin Funchess' wingspan was measured at nearly seven feet.
Fischer tweeted:
"Catch radius champ is Michigan WR Devin Funchess: 82 5/8” wingspan (just short of seven feet).
"
Devin Funchess' recent display of leaping ability is enough to see why he could go late in the first round or even early in the second. The 6'5", 230-pounder enters the combine with a grade of 5.64, per NFL.com.
Size is his obvious advantage, but he could stand to improve his durability. In 2014, he was hampered by a leg injury that limited him to 62 catches for 733 yards and four touchdowns. However, he won't be put through any physical beatings this week—just a standard barrage of jumping, catching and a series of measurements.
Frank Clark
2 of 3
UPDATE: Feb. 22, 2015 (5:53 p.m.):
Frank Clark's combine results from this weekend have been posted. Per his NFL combine profile, they are as follows:
40-yard dash: 4.79 seconds
Bench: 19 reps (225 pounds)
Vertical: 38.5"
Broad jump: 118"
Three-cone drill: 7.08 seconds
20-yard shuttle: 4.05 seconds
60-yard shuttle: 11.22 seconds
Clark performed quite well, ranking among the top performers in the three-cone drill, both shuttles and in the vertical jump competition. Character concerns will likely linger, but there shouldn't many concerns about his athletic ability after Sunday's showing in Indianapolis.
UPDATE: Feb. 20, 2015 (2:28 p.m.):
Frank Clark's recent domestic dispute will likely be a hot topic for teams looking to draft or sign him. He said the following about the alleged physical altercation on Friday (via SportsIllustrated.com):
""Basically, I put myself in the position I shouldn’t have been in," he said. "It could have all been avoided if I'd said, no, I don’t want to go to Sandusky, no, I don’t want to go the waterpark. I accept full responsibility for everything that happened. I'm going to continue to learn from it and grow from it. In the future, hopefully, one of these teams will give me a shot."
"
At 6'2" and 277 pounds, Frank Clark is a versatile and menacing defensive end capable of playing on both sides of the line. His hard-nosed play on the field could get him drafted or, at the very least, result in being offered a tryout down the road.
His obvious weakness is character issues, as outlined by his NFL.com combine profile. He carries a grade of 4.8, per the site.
Clark could stand to improve his lateral motion and speed.
Jake Ryan
3 of 3
UPDATE: Feb. 22, 2015 (5:58 p.m.):
Jake Ryan's results have been posted, and are as follows, per his NFL combine profile:
40-yard dash: 4.65 seconds
Bench press: 20 reps (225 pounds)
Vertical: 34.5"
Broad jump: 120"
Ryan's results weren't as impressive as Clark's, but he ran a respectable 40-yard dash for a linebacker. His 20 reps on the bench weren't bad, either.
Jake Ryan's leadership abilities should never be questioned. As a senior, he battled through an ACL injury recovery and finished with 112 tackles, the second-most in the Big Ten. He was an instrumental piece of Greg Mattison's defensive line, which contributed to the Wolverines' No. 13-ranked total defense.
Ryan's size is the only concern, really. He's not small in stature, but he's not an overly imposing figure, either. At times, per his NFL.com combine profile, he can be too aggressive (is there such a thing?). As noted in his profile, he needs to work on footwork and diagnosing plays.
He entered the combine with a grade of 5.3.
