Virginia Tech Football: Tracking 2015 NFL Combine Results for Former Hokie Stars
The 2015 NFL Scouting Combine has concluded, and for a few Virginia Tech Hokies, it's time to look toward the school's pro day next month in Blacksburg.
Offensive tackle Laurence Gibson and defensive backs Kyshoen Jarrett and Detrick Bonner were Tech's only attendees at the 2015 combine. Unlike last year when Kyle Fuller was a first-round pick, the Hokies don't have any players expected to go in the first three rounds.
Gibson, though, could be a sleeper in the 2015 draft. He stole the show Friday in the offensive line workouts.
While neither of the three former Hokies expects to be selected high in this spring's draft, Virginia Tech will miss them. Gibson, Bonner and Jarrett leave Blacksburg with 98 career starts between them.
How did the three former Hokies fare in the 2015 combine?
Offensive Tackle Laurence Gibson
1 of 3
Laurence Gibson came to Virginia Tech as a 4-star prospect out of the state of Arizona. It wasn't until Gibson's junior year that he started a game for Tech. He was the starting right tackle in 2013 before moving over to the left side in 2014.
At 6'6" and 305 pounds, Gibson has ideal size. However, he's had trouble keeping weight on his frame throughout his career and added 20 pounds before the 2014 season. Gibson is an exceptional athlete and his best football is seemingly ahead of him. His technique is often sloppy, though, leading to struggles in the running game.
Gibson lacks the ideal strength to be a high selection in the NFL draft. He looks like a quintessential fit for teams employing a zone-blocking scheme.
Gibson stole the show in the offensive line workouts at the combine. He led all offensive linemen in the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, broad jump and vertical jump. Gibson also posted 24 reps on the bench, an impressive number considering the questions about his strength and long arms.
Results
40-yard Dash: 5.04 seconds
Bench: 24 reps
Vertical Jump: 33.5"
Broad Jump: 113"
3-Cone Drill: 7.72 seconds
20-yard Shuttle: 4.56 seconds
Defensive Back Kyshoen Jarrett
2 of 3
Jarrett came to Virginia Tech as a 4-star cornerback from East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Jarrett played in all 14 games as a true freshman before moving into the starting lineup as a sophomore—and he never left.
Defensive coordinator Bud Foster moved Jarrett to rover from corner, and he became an All-ACC player as a junior.
At the next level, Jarrett's versatility should suit him well. He started three years at rover (strong safety) and led the Hokies in tackles and interceptions this past season. The NFL is desperate for safeties who can cover in this pass-happy era. Jarrett projects as more of a downhill safety in the NFL.
In Monday's defensive back workouts, Jarrett performed about as well as expected. He's not a player coaches will drool over due to their workouts, but he's a very physical and intelligent player who could make his living on special teams in the NFL.

40-yard Dash: 4.58 seconds

Vertical Jump: 33"
Broad Jump: 109"
Defensive Back Detrick Bonner
3 of 3
Bonner was a three-year starter at free safety for the Hokies and started the last 40 games of his career. Like Jarrett, Bonner was a cornerback in high school and started alongside Jarrett for the last three seasons.
Playing free safety for the Hokies, Bonner didn't always take great angles in the running game. Overall, he was a good player for Tech and was solid in all areas, but not a standout in any one particular area. Coaches would've liked to have seen Bonner around the ball more.
He only participated in the bench press, and at the moment it's unclear why Bonner didn't run. His pro day will be even bigger for him now and could mean the difference between being drafted or signing with a team as an undrafted free agent.
"The DBs are doing the 40, but Detrick Bonner, who was 2nd in line, didn't run. Not sure if he's injured or what the deal is. #Hokies
