WWE Superstar of the Week for February 14

The Doctor Chris MuellerFeb 14, 2015

The WWE roster always manages to put on a few great matches every week, but there is no denying that the NXT roster outshined everyone at TakeOver: Rival.

Every match on the card had something to like about it. Aside from Baron Corbin vs. Bull Dempsey, every single bout seemed like it was trying to steal the show, and they all succeeded.

Adrian Neville and Finn Balor had an incredible showdown to see who would become the No. 1 contender to the NXT Championship, and the women put on what could be considered the best Fatal 4-Way match any Diva has ever been a part of.

In fact, scratch that last statement. It was one of the best Fatal 4-Ways period.

However, the bout that really stands out as special was the main event featuring Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. We haven't seen such a decisive title win since Brock Lesnar defeated John Cena at SummerSlam, and that is just one reason why Kevin Owens is this week's highlighted Superstar.

Honorable Mention: Charlotte, Bayley, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch

Triple H said in his interview with Steve Austin that he wants to see the women of WWE have more opportunities for longer matches, and if this contest was any indication of what we might see if that happened, everyone should be excited for when that day finally arrives.

All four of these future Divas left everything they had in the ring. It really seemed like any one of them could win the title, and that is not always an easy illusion to pull off.

We have all become accustomed to Charlotte's technical prowess, but Bayley really stole the show with her athleticism and intensity.

Becky Lynch is still a relative newcomer to NXT, but anyone who doubts her potential after seeing her performance in this match needs to get his or her eyes checked.

Sasha Banks winning the title was well deserved. You could feel the emotion after she was declared the winner, but like the boss that she is, she stayed in character and shoved her former BFF away when Charlotte tried to hug her.

The Divas division has been treated like a sideshow for far too long, so it was great seeing four of the most talented ladies in NXT get the chance to shine. If this match didn't make you appreciate women's wrestling, nothing will.

Honorable Mention: Finn Balor and Adrian Neville

Finn Balor and Adrian Neville put on a match for the ages when they squared off at Rival. It was a clinic of insane spots and technical mastery.

Balor brought out his signature body paint again. It didn't change much from the last live special, but it still helped him have the best entrance of the night.

When they were known as Pac and Prince Devitt, these two had some great matches in other promotions, and this is just one more to add to the list.

There is likely to be an argument among fans as to which bout was the best from Rival, and this is definitely one of the top contenders.

It would be a crime if these two did not end up having a more lengthy feud at some point during their WWE runs. They are simply two of the most talented performers in the company today.

Honorable Mention: Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns

Say what you will about Roman Reigns' mic skills, but he has stepped up in the last week. Feuding with Daniel Bryan might seem like a way to please the fans who were unhappy with how he was eliminated during the Royal Rumble, but this storyline is going to help Reigns get over.

Their segments on Raw were good, but it was the way they interacted during the main event of SmackDown that showed the kind of potential this program has.

They also proved they have more endurance than most people by wrestling for well over an hour against several different tag teams.

These two should be able to put on a great match at WWE Fastlane. Let's just hope Reigns isn't forced to turn heel like Batista was when certain fans couldn't get over Bryan not being in the running for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Superstar of the Week for Feb. 14: Kevin Owens

If you didn't happen to see NXT TakeOver: Rival, you missed out on one of the most dominant performances in any title match in the history of WWE.

Brock Lesnar may have suplexed John Cena more times than you can count, but Owens dominated Zayn using a variety of moves, making their match more entertaining.

There were plenty of big spots, but it was the handful of powerbombs he delivered to Zayn that made Owens look like an absolute beast.

Some may question the decision to put the title on someone who just debuted two months ago, but if you have been following Owens since his time in Ring of Honor, you know he is worth the risk.

This is a guy who never would have been signed to a WWE contract 10 years ago. He's chubby, not overly charismatic and doesn't wear traditional wrestling gear.

Not being the prototypical WWE wrestler is what makes him so unique, though. We have seen many unconventional wrestlers over the years, but few have the kind of potential Owens possesses.

His brawling skills are the thing you will hear people mention the most when talking about his best attributes, but he is more than just a guy with a mean right hand.

When was the last time you saw someone who is 300 pounds flip over the top rope or attempt a senton bomb from the top turnbuckle? Those are the kinds of risks Owens takes all the time.

It wasn't just the fact that he won the title so early in his run that made him look like a strong competitor; it was because it happened with a TKO decision.

This has been an outstanding feud since the moment it started when Owens attacked Zayn following his emotional victory at R Evolution.

The fact that WWE acknowledged the history between Zayn and Owens made it something the hardcore fans could invest in, but it was how everything was presented over the course of the past eight weeks that helped Owens legitimize himself immediately.

The video package highlighting this storyline was also unique in that Owens did not look like your average heel who had turned on his best friend. You really believed him when he said he was still happy for Zayn and only did what he did out of a desire to be the champion.

After seeing how well he has acclimated to the WWE style and how the fans have reacted to him, there is little doubt that Owens will be a force to be reckoned with when he eventually gets called up to the main roster.

What do you think? Was Kevin Owens the Superstar of the Week? Who do you feel should have gotten the honor if not him? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
