Mark Helfrich, Oregon Agree to New Contract: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction
Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich's day keeps getting better.
Earlier, star FCS quarterback Vernon Adams announced his intention to transfer to the Ducks. Now, Helfrich is getting a huge raise, per Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman:
Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens confirmed the news in a statement, via the Daily Emerald's Joseph Hoyt:
USA Today's George Schroeder went inside the numbers:
Helfrich's old contract paid him $1.8 million per year, meaning he'll receive a 75 percent raise in 2015. According to The Register-Guard's Diane Dietz, he goes from the 52nd-highest-paid coach in the country to No. 23, and from No. 10 to no less than No. 5 in the Pac-12.
He also has the potential to receive performance bonuses that max out at $1.6 million, as well as two cars and "reasonable amounts of Nike gear."
It's safe to say life is pretty good for the man some have suggested is "living in Chip Kelly's shadow."
Helfrich, the team's former offensive coordinator who took over for Kelly in 2013, has kept the Ducks operating at an explosive level. In his first two seasons, his fast-paced Oregon squad went 24-4, and earned a huge win over Florida State in the inaugural College Football Playoff semifinals.
247Sports' Will Rubin put it simply:
Helfrich faces the most difficult task of his young career, as he'll attempt to replace potential No. 1 pick Marcus Mariota and keep his team among college football's most dominant powerhouses.
With this new contract, though, it's clear Oregon has faith in his ability to do exactly that.
