Georgia Football: 2015 Signees Who Likely Won't See Field Until Junior Season

Brian JonesFeb 9, 2015

Now that the 2015 signing class is set, Georgia Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt and his coaching staff can focus on the 2015 season, and it starts with spring ball, which will begin next month.

But when fall camp rolls around, the signees will be expected to go to work right away, because if the Bulldogs want to win the national title, some of the young players will have to grow up in a hurry.

Most fans will expect players like Trent Thompson, Terry Godwin and Rico McGraw to contribute right away, because they were impact players in high school and they are expected to do the same thing in Athens.

But there are a few players who will not be called on this season, for various reasons. But they will still need to continue to work, because they will be expected to contribute soon enough.

Here are the 2015 signees who likely won’t see the field until their junior season.

ILB Juwan Taylor

1 of 5

Juwan Taylor has the skills to be a very talented inside linebacker for the Bulldogs. He can tackle, he can hit, and he has great lateral movement.

The only issue is that there are some young players ready to take over both inside linebacker positions now that Amarlo Herrera and Ramik Wilson have moved on.

Tim Kimbrough and Reggie Carter got to see a good amount of action last year, and they will be ready to take over the starting roles. But then there are Jake Ganus, Ryne Rankin and Detric-Bing Dukes, and those guys will see a lot of action at inside linebacker.

Taylor will get his opportunity, but it won’t be right away.

S Kirby Choates

2 of 5

The secondary for Georgia is going to be interesting this upcoming season. There are a lot of young pieces on the team who are talented, and the coaches wanted to build on that with the addition of more talent for national signing day.

Kirby Choates is a safety from Atlanta who did not get a lot of attention from the bigger schools but can be a great piece in the secondary when it’s all said and done.

Defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt will shift players around in the secondary, so a cornerback could be playing safety one day, and it could be the other way around the next.

There is a chance Choates could see the field before his junior season, but due to the young talent ahead of him and the fact the secondary did improve in 2014, Choates will be better off learning the next two seasons and then begin to be a contributor.

DL DaQuan Hawkins

3 of 5

The defensive line for the Bulldogs is unique because for most of last year they went with either three or two down defensive linemen.

DaQuan Hawkins is a defensive tackle from Atlanta who is big, physical and fast, and there is no reason he shouldn't see the field very soon.

But the competition for the starting defensive line spots will be intense, and with the other newcomers such as Trent Thompson and Johnathan Ledbetter coming in, Hawkins could be the odd man out.

One of the things Hawkins will have to learn is to know how to play defensive end and nose tackle. If he’s able to learn how to play those positions, then he can hurry up the process of getting him on the field.

RB Tae Crowder

4 of 5

Tae Crowder is an interesting prospect. He can play either running back or wide receiver, but there likely won’t be a place for him this year or next when it comes to playing time.

The running back position is already set with Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. And with the signing of Terry Godwin and Jayson Stanley, the receiver position will be also hard to crack.

Crowder has the size (6’3’’, 220 lbs) to be a great player at either position, but he will be better suited at running back.

Final Analysis

5 of 5

Once fall camp begins, there will be a lot of movers and shakers on offense and defense. These four players can easily earn some playing time this season, but because of depth and experience, odds are they will see action starting in 2017.

That is not a bad thing, because despite not having the experience on the field, those players will be a lot smarter and make better decisions because they have been in the system the last two to three seasons.

There will be a good number of players to come from this signing class who will see the field this year. But the ones who don’t get to see any on-field action shouldn't worry, because they will make their mark in the near future.
