Popovich Becomes 2nd Coach to Win 1,000 Games with 1 Team
San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich earned the 1,000th regular-season win of his career with Monday's 95-93 victory over the Indiana Pacers, joining Jerry Sloan as the only coaches to win 1,000 or more games with one franchise, per ESPN.com.
Popovich has never been the head coach for any other team, while Sloan earned 1,127 of his 1,221 regular-season coaching victories for the Utah Jazz.
Assuming he wants to stick around, Popovich can probably pass Sloan's single-team record, either late in the 2016-17 season or at some point in 2017-18.
Only nine NBA coaches have won 1,000 games, and Popovich is third-fastest of the bunch to reach that mark, having done so in just 1,462 games, per NBA.com/Stats. Phil Jackson unsurprisingly holds the record of 1,423 games, followed by Pat Riley at 1,434.
Riley had some rough seasons with the Miami Heat toward the end of his coaching career, so Popovich's win percentage of .684 trails only Phil Jackson's .704 mark among coaches with 1,000 wins, per ESPN Stats & Info.
Riley, Popovich and Jackson are the only 1,000-win coaches with multiple championships, as Jackson has an NBA-record 11, while Popovich and Riley have five apiece.
Don Nelson, the all-time coaching wins leader at 1,335, did not win a championship in his career. The same is true of Sloan (third all-time with 1,221 wins), George Karl (sixth, 1,131) and Rick Adelman (eighth, 1,042), all of whom may still end up adding to their totals, though in Sloan's case that seems less likely.
At 66 years old, Popovich still seems young enough to eventually make a run at Nelson's all-time record, if he so desires.
Of course, Popovich would likely need another five to seven seasons to get there, and with nothing left to prove, he may retire before that time or move to a front-office role.
