Twitter Reacts to UCLA's National Signing Day Results

Evan ReierFeb 4, 2015

As national signing day draws to a close, players made the decision of where they would get their education and play football. It's a big day for both players and teams, but no one had a bigger day overall than UCLA.

The Bruins signed huge names such as tight end Chris Clark and wide receiver Cordell Broadus—the son of rapper Snoop Dogg—who both announced their signings on ESPNU, as well as running back Soso Jamabo, who tweeted his commitment Wednesday morning.

Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports provided an interesting fact about Broadus' signing:

Along with the addition to hip-hop royalty, fans seem to be happy with the overall class, and deservedly so. UCLA jumped up in almost every major ranking list of recruiting class, including ESPN's:

Soso Jamobo, the player who jokingly announced that he was trying to decide between ITT Tech and the University of Phoenix, celebrated his UCLA commitment with a Childish Gambino lyric:

He followed with an explanation, because not all of UCLA's boosters are hip to Childish Gambino's music:

Former UCLA and NFL QB Troy Aikman knew the importance of the day, and award-winning writer and director Gina Prince-Bythewood even showed support for UCLA's efforts on NSD:

However, UCLA did lose a quality signing in Cassius Peat to Michigan State on signing day, as Joe Rexrode of the Detroit Free Press points out:

And with news breaking out that defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich may be leaving for the Atlanta Falcons, per 247Sports' Rusty Mansell, the Bruins could still lose a huge recruit. Committed outside linebacker Roquan Smith is yet to sign and is now reevaluating his options, according to Macon.com's Ron Seibel.

Rivals.com writer Edward Lewis reported from a source that nothing has been agreed upon officially between Ulbrich and the Falcons, however:

How well did UCLA really do?

Compared to the staunch competition UCLA faces for recruits (USC, Oregon, Washington and Stanford), obtaining the No. 2 Pac-12 recruiting class for 2015 is a strong accomplishment.

As Oregon Emerald writer Josh Schlicter points out, USC destroyed the rest of the conference overall, but UCLA's efforts are not in vain. It locked a solid class that beat out the rest of the big names of the Pac-12 besides USC.

But the potential loss of Roquan Smith could really hurt the Bruins' overall class, and it may bring their overall class rank down. And while waiting until the near-end of signing day to announce that Ulbrich would be leaving the team is not the most ethical decision, it is a smart one.

UCLA head coach Jim Mora will receive a lot of flack for this decision (if it holds up), and he may deserve it. It may be "disgusting," as Max Meyer points out, but it isn't surprising, however. In the cutthroat battle that is college football recruiting, this kind of thing is almost normal.

UCLA's class is no where near the biggest class in the country, and for the most part, it locked up all its players months ago. However, the signings of Clark, Jamobo, and Broadus are all key signings who could make huge impacts immediately for UCLA.

All in all, UCLA had an incredible signing day and an incredible class. The Bruins have been a program that has risen significantly over the past few years under Jim Mora, to the point where they are now consistently considered national title contenders.

The boost in their class on national signing day is exactly what the Bruins needed to continue their stay in college football's upper echelon and to potentially reach even higher.

(And now they even have Snoop Dogg rooting for them! We'll all be waiting for Snoop to drop a UCLA-themed mixtape in the future.)

National signing day grade: B+
