National Signing Day 2015: Recruit Commitments, Comments and Twitter Reaction
National signing day belongs to Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Again.
The Alabama head coach locked down his fifth straight No. 1 overall class Wednesday, beating out hard-charging USC and fellow stalwart Florida State for the crown.
Four-star wide receiver Daylon Charlot and 3-star defensive end Christian Bell joined a group of 22 other players who had long ago confirmed their intentions. For most, Wednesday merely meant signing on the dotted line and preparing themselves for life in Tuscaloosa. The Tide landed six 5-star recruits, the most of any school by far and were considered a near-lock to wrap up another No. 1 class on signing day.
Following not too far behind was USC, which had a huge day that could catapult the Trojans back into title contention.
Five-star defensive lineman Rasheem Green and top cornerback Iman Marshall lead a group of five previously undecided players to choose USC. Four-star linebacker John Houston and wide receiver Deontay Burnett also committed to continue what's been a whirlwind run for head coach Steve Sarkisian.
The Trojans went 9-4 in Sarkisian's first season but have been building with young players despite recruiting sanctions. They were the 10th-ranked class in 2014 and wound up being by far the second-best class this season.
"Right now, in the world of recruiting and all that is going on in social media, everybody expects these players to start right away, and if they don't there must be something wrong," Sarkisian said, per Chris Foster of The Los Angeles Times. "That's not the case. Just because a guy needs a year or two to develop doesn't mean he can't become an All-American and help us win championships."
The last few recruiting days have been a disappointment for Florida State, but Jimbo Fisher still managed to coax a third-place finish.
Quarterback Kai Locksley, running back Jordan Scarlett and cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick all either pulled out or rebuffed the Seminoles in recent days, per Corey Clark of the Tallahassee Democrat. Linebacker Brian Bell, a 3-star who was initially headed to Tallahassee, also mutually agreed to not enroll due to off-field issues, per Bud Elliott of Tomahawk Nation.
Instead, the big coup for the Seminoles was 4-star athlete Marcus Lewis. The wide receiver/defensive back hybrid, who will likely play the latter role in college, chose Florida State over Kentucky, which had put in a hard charge throughout the process.
Lewis rounded out a class featuring a bevy of high-profile names, but one that was a little lacking in quantity; Tennessee nearly snuck in for a third-place finish thanks to its nine-recruit advantage.
The Volunteers instead finished a very solid fourth. Butch Jones' last-ditch effort to convince 4-star offensive tackle Drew Richmond to flip his commitment from Ole Miss worked out, as he's the biggest uncommitted name to arrive in Knoxville. Overall, Davis landed 29 recruits for his 2015 class—one of the largest hauls among Power Five schools.
"They're putting all their eggs in the right basket. Let me just say that," said ESPN national recruiting director Tom Luginbill, via Duane Rankin of the Montgomery Advertiser. "They're building the team from the inside out. All the emphasis is along the offensive and defensive front. They know they've got the skill caliber to compete in the conference right now."
Also having a fine day was LSU head coach Les Miles, who solidified his second straight top-five class. The Tigers landed 4-star offensive tackle Toby Weathersby and 4-star athlete Derrick Dillon, with the latter dropping his commitment to Florida at the last minute.

As for the big individual names, eight 5-star players came into Wednesday without a commitment in place. If their choices were any indication, the longstanding domination of the college football landscape by the SEC and Pac-12 isn't changing anytime soon.
We've already covered Marshall and Green, the two leads on a big day for USC. The two defenders will spend at least three years attempting to stop 5-star running back Soso Jamabo, who signed with rival UCLA. Jamabo committed in an awfully unique fashion, using lyrics from rapper Childish Gambino to express his excitement over the, umm...well, he can take it away:
Speaking of rap, the Bruins also landed the son of a rap legend. Cordell Broadus, son of Calvin Broadus, aka Snoop Doggy Dogg (aka Snoop Lion, aka. Snoop Dogg), chose UCLA over Snoop's formerly beloved USC.
As for the remainder of high-profile names, they were mostly scattered throughout the SEC.
New Florida coach Jim McElwain landed two 5-stars to shore up the lines on both sides of the ball with offensive tackle Martez Ivey and defensive end Cece Jefferson. That pair were apart of a seven-recruit day for McElwain, who winds up with a solid 21st-place class despite being on the job only a couple months. The Gators moved up 45 spots on 247Sports' composite rankings on Wednesday alone.
Elsewhere, Missouri landed one of the best recruits in program history with defensive end Terry Beckner Jr. Beckner, an East St. Louis product, chose the Tigers over Florida State, Auburn and Ohio State. Had Auburn been able to land Beckner, it would have had a claim to be the best 2015 defensive line class. The Tigers also received their commitment from defensive end Byron Cowart, the year's consensus top defensive end, on Wednesday.
"My immediate thing is to be consistent," Cowart said, per Andrea Adelson of ESPN.com. "That's why the All-America game, I was trying to be high-tempo, high-motor every day. I have a big chip on my shoulder. I have a boulder on my shoulder, so I'm ready to get after it."
Finishing up the undecided 5-stars was defensive tackle Daylon Mack, who chose Texas A&M over a pair of local Big 12 schools (TCU and Texas). Overall, the SEC signed 19 players who were ranked as either 5-star or 4-star recruits, by far the most among conferences, per SB Nation's tracker. The conference overall boasts five of the top 10 recruiting teams and 10 of the top 21.
You know, exactly the same way they dominate the Top 25 polls come September. Funny how those things work.
