National Signing Day Predictions: Projecting Destinations for Top Recruits

Sean ODonnellFeb 4, 2015

College football's balance of power remains in limbo heading into national signing day.

Sure, some of the usual suspects, such as SEC powerhouse Alabama, have already put together fine recruiting classes prior to Wednesday's event; however, the likes of USC, Tennessee, Clemson and LSU aren't far behind. A couple of key commitments from remaining recruits could result in a shift within the nation's pecking order.

So, will the rich get richer, or will this year's recruiting class tighten things up prior to the upcoming season and second annual College Football Playoff?

Iman Marshall, CB

Marshall, a 5-star recruit and the top cornerback prospect, according to 247Sports' composite rankings, will be deciding between his six finalists on national signing day. The corner hasn't alluded to any sort of favorite, but he did make his choices well-known by releasing this teaser video:

Sure, the move to produce the video may seem a bit brash, but let's get one thing straight: The hype surrounding Marshall is very real.

At 6'1" and 190 pounds, he has the size and length of a prototypical outside corner; however, that's only a portion of what makes him such a coveted prospect. While that size allows him to defend against larger wide receivers in press coverage, Marshall also has the necessary quickness and agility to stay on the hip of quicker receivers in off-man coverage as well.

Those traits should allow him to excel rather quickly at the collegiate level, making him a multiyear starter for the school of his choice. Now, there's the matter of deciding which school will ultimately land the sought-after prospect.

The heavy favorite in this race is USC. A Long Beach, California, native, Marshall may opt to go with an in-state program, and he could certainly do worse than the Trojans. Although, a new hire at Michigan quickly made the school a possibility, via Rivals.com:

Jim Harbaugh has been successful at both the collegiate and professional levels, making him a very desirable coach for many recruits. He has the ability to quickly turn Michigan's program around, and according to a report from Brandon Brown of TheWolverine.com, Marshall "came away impressed with Ann Arbor" after his official visit.

Here's a look at the cornerback alongside Harbaugh and Co. at Michigan:

Marshall's decision could certainly go either way here. Whether he decides to go with USC or Michigan, he'll be landing in a quality program surrounded by great players and coaches. While remaining in California to play at USC does seem like a very appealing option, there's something about the allure of playing for Harbaugh and helping the coach build something special at Michigan.

Prediction: Michigan
