WWE Continues to Succeed in Building Bray Wyatt Up for Potential Undertaker Bout

Ryan DilbertFeb 3, 2015

By portraying Bray Wyatt as the dark force he has always claimed himself to be, WWE is forging a monster to face a legend, setting up a battle with Undertaker at WrestleMania.

Watching Wyatt's fangs grow longer, seeing him tear apart his opposition has been mighty fun. The trend of his piling on victories implies that WWE is prepping him for something monumental at The Showcase of the Immortals. The Eater of Worlds' recent clues hint that that something is a showdown with Undertaker.

And if that is indeed the direction the company is going, it's getting it right.

On Monday's Raw, Wyatt won a physical matchup against Dolph Ziggler. This is someone who Wyatt has beaten before, but it felt bigger this time.

Credit some of that to ring time. It was the second-longest bout of the night on an edition of Raw filled with short contests that felt unfinished. WWE gave Wyatt and Ziggler the floor, and the two men responded.

Ziggler made his mark as a showman and a gutsy babyface pushing back the bigger man. It was Wyatt, though, who most stood out.

He issued clotheslines and right hands that made him look like a lumberjack chopping away at a tree.

Wyatt hit Sister Abigail for the win, extending a run that has seen him obtain the same result time and time again. In order for Wyatt to feel worthy of a shot against Undertaker, he has to look impressive, like a destructive force worth fearing.

That's been the case for the last three months.

Per CageMatch.net, Wyatt is now 12-1 since November, not counting the Royal Rumble. In that span, he has defeated three former world champs in Ziggler, Daniel Bryan and Jack Swagger, steamrolled through midcard wrestlers and won his series of clashes with Dean Ambrose.

Fans know that wins in pro wrestling are the company's choice, but seeing enough of them convinces the crowd of a man's might. That's what is happening with Wyatt. He feels more powerful each week, taking down foe after foe.

WWE is booking him as untouchable at the moment, working to erase memories of his running in place after his feud with John Cena last year.

And although the Royal Rumble match will be remembered for its failings, the early part of it served as an announcement from Wyatt. He entered fifth and began to go on a rampage.

As noted on WWE.com, The Man of 1,000 Truths eliminated six men and lasted over 47 minutes in the match.

WWE wisely used the Rumble as Wyatt's stage, a place where he could imprint the idea of his power on the audience's mind. His thrashings of Bubba Ray Dudley, Boogeyman and Luke Harper are among the lasting images of that match.

Bray Wyatt attacks Boogeyman.

Combining that performance with his recent record has given him a store of momentum to work with.

He'll need that for what lies ahead. Even with his undefeated streak broken, taking on Undertaker at WrestleMania is an honor, a chance often given only to WWE's elite. Building up his record is key to making Wyatt feel worthy of that.

His mic work has been ready for prime time from the get-go.

It's with his cryptic promos that WWE is teasing Wyatt's collision with Undertaker. On Monday's Raw, he spoke of watching someone for a long time, someone whom everyone used to fear. Wyatt challenged him to come find him.

Wyatt has long mastered that element of the game. He has been the most unsettling, dreadful monster in WWE based on his words alone. For a while, his actions in the ring didn't match those words.

He failed to gather momentum; he failed to live up to his sinister promises.

Now he is living up to them. WWE is booking him as a terrible beast who lays out the men standing in his way. He now marches to a date with Undertaker, with the company playing just the right song.
