Super Bowl Quarter Score 2015: Patriots vs. Seahawks 4th Quarter Update, Recap

Chris RolingFeb 1, 2015

Down 10 points entering the final frame of Super Bowl XLIX, Tom Brady led the New England Patriots to a comeback for the ages to upend the Seattle Seahawks 28-24.

The Patriots did anything but throw in the towel when the fourth quarter got underway.

In fact, Rob Ninkovich and the New England defense took down Russell Wilson and forced a punt to start things.

The so-called Legion of Boom, without Jeremy Lane, was unable to halt the Patriots on the ensuing drive. Julian Edelman turned in a big play before Tom Brady found Danny Amendola in the back of the end zone to make it a three-point contest.

In the process, Brady made history by surpassing Joe Montana:

In a strange turn of events, the Seahawks seemed to go away from their preferred style of play rather than burn the clock while up three points.

The result was a punt, with the puzzling approach best summed up by Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman:

Call it the Shane Vereen show after that, as Brady repeatedly turned to his running back to keep the defense honest. When the Seahawks defenders were where he wanted them, Brady went over the top to Rob Gronkowski.

Brady did this twice. The willpower from both units was evident too, as NFL Network's Ian Rapoport points out:

This time, Brady did not miss near the goal line. This time, it was Edelman's chance to score after he pulled off a masterful piece of route running to free himself from the defender.

Brady's surgical precision, as ESPN Stats & Info captures, proved noteworthy:

Not to be outdone, Wilson threw a bomb to Marshawn Lynch on the very next offensive snap to make things interesting in the dwindling moments.

Then, Jermaine Kearse happened.

It looked like a routine breakup. Instead, Brady could be seen having David Tyree nightmares from the sideline as Kearse came down with a bobbled catch:

Which—befitting of the wildest Super Bowl in recent memory—wound up as a footnote in history thanks to an interception by Malcolm Butler:

Pete Carroll will never live the decision down, as Bleacher Report's Matt Miller points out:

Alas, an ugly brawl to end things should never overshadow one of the most impressive recent fourth-quarter comebacks in the history of the Big Game.

Nor should it be the lasting memory of what might go down as the most entertaining Super Bowl in the last decade or more.

Seattle had dynasty aspirations, but Brady—the Super Bowl MVP—and the Patriots were not ready to relinquish the status just yet.
