Super Bowl XLIX: Live Stream Guide, Patriots vs. Seahawks NBC TV Coverage Info

Sean ODonnellFeb 1, 2015

The day we've all been waiting for has finally arrived. Super Bowl Sunday is the most highly anticipated sporting event of the year, pulling in roughly 110 million viewers worldwide. The game is a de facto national holiday in the United States, but Americans have already gone as far as petitioning the White House to recognize the day after the big game as an actual holiday (it didn't pass).

Still, this game has provided edge-of-your seat action for decades, and 2015 will be no different. The New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks dominated their respective conferences for the better part of the season, but they haven't faced each other since Week 6 of 2012. That only adds another bit of intrigue to what promises to be an extremely captivating contest.

Super Bowl XLIX By the Numbers

Both the Patriots and the Seahawks have been extremely impressive this season. However, they have been generating wins in different fashions.

While both teams boast sound defenses, Seattle relies more heavily on its unit, keeping opposing offenses off the field and controlling the game with its strong running game. New England's defense plays more of a bend-but-don't-break style, keeping opponents from outscoring the team's prolific passing game.

That said, here's a look at a side-by-side comparison of both teams' offensive numbers:

Patriots257.6107.929.311th/4th

Interestingly enough, the Seahawks have generated more yards per game than the Patriots. However, New England has been able to come away with a higher average of points per contest. Much of that has to do with the amount of scoring chances for each team over the course of a game.

The Patriots' high-octane offense has the ability to pick up chunks of yards in a hurry, driving down the field and quickly getting points on the board. This allows them to get many offensive possessions and more scoring opportunities as a result.

The Seahawks tend to pass sparingly, utilizing their top-ranked running game to control the pace of a contest. This is a highly effective strategy. However, since this tends to result in long, time-consuming drives, scoring opportunities are lessened.

So, will the Patriots' prolific offense be able to keep up that trend against Seattle's stout defense, or will the Seahawks offense wear down New England's defense and take control of the game?

To help answer that question, here's a side-by-side look at both teams' defensive numbers:

Seahawks185.681.515.91st/1st
Patriots239.8104.319.613th/8th

Those are some extremely impressive numbers from each team. However, Seattle's prowess on the defensive side of the ball is simply unmatched. The Seahawks hit their stride down the final stretch of the regular season, allowing seven points or fewer in five of their final six games. Continuing that trend in the playoffs, the team allowed a total of just three touchdowns to the Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers.

New England's defense has been slightly more erratic, but it's been able to get the job done. It held opponents to 17 points or fewer in each of its final four regular-season contests, and while it struggled in the divisional round of the playoffs against the Baltimore Ravens, it got back on track against the Indianapolis Colts, holding Andrew Luck and Co. to a mere seven points in the conference championship.

These squads may be built differently, but they both have effective winning formulas. Expect to see a chess match between head coaches Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll in the Super Bowl, as they will surely attempt to exploit matchup advantages to gain the upper hand.

Will Seattle's ground-and-pound style of play earn it another Lombardi Trophy, or will New England's potent attack earn the team yet another championship? We're about to find out.
