Game Preview

This year's Super Bowl sure seems to be a very evenly matched contest. While the Patriots and Seahawks differ in terms of strengths, they are both very well-rounded teams that have a knack for winning games in a multitude of fashions.

New England's biggest strength is in the passing game. Tom Brady will undoubtedly find his way into the Hall of Fame once his illustrious career comes to a close. He continues to play ageless football, throwing for 4,109 yards, 33 touchdowns and nine interceptions for a passer rating of 97.4 during his 15th NFL season.

He hasn't slowed down in the playoffs, either. Through two games, Brady has passed for 593 yards and six touchdowns against two interceptions for a passer rating of 99.8. He is known for his clutch play in tough situations, and that always makes the Patriots a threat to win it all.

While Brady has weapons like Julian Edelman and Brandon LaFell at his disposal, his biggest asset in the Super Bowl will be tight end Rob Gronkowski. After a stellar regular season that included 82 receptions for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns, the tight end continued his scoring bonanza in the playoffs, reaching the end zone in both the divisional round and conference championship.

The reason Gronkowski will be such an enormous weapon for New England is because the tight end position has been Seattle's lone weakness on the defensive side of the ball this season. Pro Football on ESPN tweeted a telling statistic regarding the impending matchup:

If Brady can connect with Gronkowski early and often, Seattle may be forced to shift his way in coverage, opening things up for the team's wide receivers and allowing better opportunities for the bruising LeGarrette Blount to find running lanes.

The Seahawks, on the other hand, must keep it on the ground to find success in the Super Bowl.

Seattle finished the regular season as the league's top rushing team, averaging 172.6 yards per game on the ground. Running back Marshawn Lynch continues to come up big when heavily utilized, wearing down opposing defenses and watching the missed tackles begin to accumulate late in games.

Just how dominant has Lynch been in the second half of his contests this season? Take a look at this intriguing graphic from ESPN Stats & Info:

That allowed Lynch to accumulate 1,306 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns while averaging 4.7 yards per carry during the regular season. The ball-carrier enters the Super Bowl with a big head of steam after rushing 25 times for 157 yards and a score in the conference championship against the Green Bay Packers.

While Lynch's numbers are certainly impressive, quarterback Russell Wilson is just as important to the team's success on the ground. He led all quarterbacks with 849 yards during the regular season, averaging an impressive 7.2 yards per carry along the way. His ability to scramble and create something out of nothing has been frustrating defenses all season long.

If both Lynch and Wilson can establish the run early against a Patriots defense that has allowed an average of 4.9 and 4.4 yards per rush in two playoff games, respectively, the Seahawks will be able to control the clock, keep their ferocious defense rested and, more importantly, keep Brady off the field.

Both Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll have been highly successful in the playoffs, and this game is poised to produce a very fascinating chess match, as they will be expected to make adjustments throughout the game to gain the upper hand.

This one has all the makings of producing a nail-biting, down-to-the-wire finish. Hang on to your hats.
