Irving Sets Franchise Record for Three-Points in 55-Point Showing
Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving scored a career-high 55 points in Wednesday's 99-94 win over the Portland Trail Blazers, giving him the NBA's best single-game point total thus fa in the 2014-15 season, per NBA.com/stats.
Irving set or approached a number of different records, setting the Cavs' mark for most three-pointers made (11) in a game, while falling one short of the same record on a league-wide level, per NBA.com/stats.
Irving's 55 points were tied for the second most ever scored by a player on the Cavs, trailing only LeBron James' 56 from a March 2005 game against the Toronto Raptors, per Basketball-Reference.com's play index.
Unsurprisingly, James is responsible for two of the three 55-point showings in franchise history, with eight of the 10 50-point performances, per Basketball-Reference.com's play index.
James missed Wednesday's game with a sore wrist, and his absence forced Irving to take on a larger scoring role, leading to the historic night.
In addition to his gaudy numbers, Irving drained a go-ahead three-pointer in the final 10 seconds to break a 94-94 tie.
Prior to Wednesday, the 22-year-old point guard had never topped 44 points in a single game, though he had registered between 40 and 44 on five separate occasions, according to Basketball-Reference.com.
With the Cavs now riding an eight-game winning streak, Irvin will look to stay hot Friday night against the defensively challenged Sacramento Kings.
