Liverpool Transfer News: Brendan Rodgers Provides Latest on January Rumours

Nick AkermanJan 26, 2015

Brendan Rodgers has suggested Liverpool won't make any signings in the January transfer window.

The Northern Irishman spoke ahead of the second leg of the Reds' Capital One Cup semi-final clash against Chelsea, which takes place on Tuesday. Liverpool deserved more than their 1-1 draw in the opening tie but will need to produce a top performance to overcome Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

However, Rodgers is willing to crack on with his current squad, per James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo:

Andy Dunn of the Daily Mirror recently suggested Mario Balotelli could be pushed out of the club without further influence.

"For me his days are numbered, and I would not be surprised if we don't see Mario Balotelli in a Liverpool shirt again," he told Sky SportsSunday Supplement.

This comment came after the Italian striker was left out of Rodgers' squad to face Bolton Wanderers in Saturday's FA Cup fixture despite Liverpool needing a clinical finisher throughout the 0-0 draw. Rodgers indicates the player still has an opportunity to prove himself, however, per BBC Sport's Juliette Ferrington:

It is unclear whether Balotelli will make an appearance at Stamford Bridge, but judging on his form and that of Liverpool, playing time seems unlikely. Balotelli's last 90-minute appearance came during the defeat to Newcastle on Nov. 1, and he's played longer than 45 minutes just once since then, per WhoScored.com.

The atmosphere will be hostile during Tuesday's match, another reason why Rodgers is unlikely to trust his summer signing. Chelsea supporters are expected to mock Steven Gerrard's crucial slip from last season—which handed Demba Ba a simple goal against the Blues, ending Liverpool's title hopes—despite calls from Jose Mourinho to stop such chants, per Tom Edwards of The Telegraph.

Chelsea supporters are also likely to be in greater voice to help the side bounce back from their shocking 4-2 FA Cup defeat against Bradford. Balotelli's appearance would cause a reaction from the home fans, who know he can be easily frustrated into making mistakes.

Liverpool's recent run of form—just one loss in 16 matches—has perhaps stopped Rodgers from looking too avidly into the market. He spent lavishly during the summer and will need to reassess his squad's objectives at the end of the season before bringing in further talent.

The club continue to be linked with Karim Benzema, as reported by Alex Harris of the Daily Star. Elsewhere, Valencia have reportedly "warned off" Rodgers with a £70 million price tag for striker Paco Alcacer, per talkSPORT.

The youngster is likely to sign a new contract at the Mestalla, as revealed by sporting director Francisco Rufete, per the aforementioned report: "We still have to nail down a few small things after months of negotiations, but everything seems to indicate that Paco Alcacer will soon become a Valencia player for the next five years, until 2020."

B/R UK's Alex Dimond recently discussed a range of potential signings for the club:

Champions League football for a second successive year could attract major stars of this calibre. It's unclear whether Liverpool will retain their place in Europe's elite competition, but the recent improvement in form should have fans feeling optimistic.

Rodgers' suggestion that he will stick with who he's got underlines the squad's growing confidence. Although yet to replicate the stunning form of last season, Liverpool possess the squad to make a legitimate run at the Premier League's fourth spot.
