Whiteside Records 1st Triple-Double Including Blocks in Heat History

Bleacher Report MilestonesJan 26, 2015

Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside turned in a remarkable performance in Sunday's 96-84 win over the Chicago Bulls, becoming the first player in franchise history to record a triple-double that includes blocks, per ESPN Stats and Info.

Whiteside recorded 14 points, 13 rebounds and 12 blocks over just 24 minutes, 37 seconds to set a new NBA record for fewest minutes played in a game with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks, per NBA.com/Stats.

He also logged the second-fewest minutes in a 12-block game, behind only Manute Bol's 12-block performance over 23 minutes in 1986-87, per NBA.com/Stats.

Furthermore, Whiteside became the first player since Shawn Bradley in 1997-98 to record 12 or more points, rebounds and blocks in the same game, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Whiteside, Bradley, Mark Eaton, Shaquille O'Neal, Dikembe Mutombo and Hakeem Olajuwon are the only players in the last 50 years to record 14-plus points, 13-plus rebounds and 12-plus blocks in one game, per Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press.

Of course, someone had to be on the other side of all those swats, and Bulls forward Taj Gibson often did the honors, getting five of his shots blocked by Whiteside, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Following Sunday's massive stat line, the 25-year-old center is averaging 7.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocks over just 15.9 minutes, which translates to per-36 averages of 17.4 points, 14 rebounds and 5.8 blocks.

A second-round draft pick of the Sacramento Kings back in 2010, Whiteside had played just 19 NBA games before this season, last making an appearance in April of 2012.

While he's only played 18 games this season and therefore doesn't qualify for the NBA leaderboards, Whiteside has more blocks per game than every player in the league besides the New Orleans Pelicans' Anthony Davis, who is averaging 2.9 over 36.2 minutes.

Assuming Heat coach Erik Spoelstra starts consistently giving Whiteside around 25-30 minutes per game, the breakout star should eventually challenge Davis for the top spot in swats per game.
