Picking the 11 Worst PSG January Transfer Window Signings

Jonathan JohnsonJan 22, 2015

January is traditionally not a happy time for French champions Paris Saint-Germain in the transfer window.

It is not uncommon to see them remain inactive for the month and sign nobody and there are few examples of the capital club making moves at this time of year.

However, PSG have good reason for that.

Almost all of their January signings since the introduction of the transfer window system have either been failures or not worked out immediately.

Here are 11 players acquired by Les Parisiens who would qualify as being among the 11 worst signed by the club during the winter market.

11. Jerome Leroy

1 of 11

Brought in by his formative club on loan in January of 2002, Jerome Leroy scored two Ligue 1 goals in one match against FC Lorient, but did little else in his 11 appearances for the remainder of that season.

PSG still made his loan a permanent return to the French capital, though, paying bitter rivals Olympique de Marseille to keep him.

Leroy would go on to enjoy more success with club and, overall, cannot be considered a bad player for PSG. But in terms of that January move, he was a flop.

The Frenchman went on to win the Coupe de France with Les Parisiens, but his second spell was less fruitful than the first and he left for EA Guingamp in 2003.

10. Jeremy Clement

2 of 11

Signed by Paul Le Guen in January of 2007 after the pair had worked together at Glasgow Rangers, French midfielder Jeremy Clement moved to PSG at the request of the coach.

Clement featured just nine times in Ligue 1 in his first half a season in Paris, but did stay for four more full campaigns before joining current club AS Saint-Etienne.

9. Danijel Ljuboja

3 of 11

A cult favourite at PSG, former Serbian international Danijel Ljuboja was acquired in January of 2004 from Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace. The skunk-haired striker notched five goals in 17 league appearances immediately after making his move.

However, Ljuboja would only go on to score two in 25 appearances the following season and then departed for VfB Stuttgart after a successful loan spell.

8. Yohan Cabaye

4 of 11

Although he is now working his way out of this list after a good start to 2015, PSG’s Yohan Cabaye has been largely disappointing since he arrived last January.

Considering the significant price tag, the French international qualifies as a poor January transfer window signing from the big-spending Parisian club.

Cabaye managed just one assist in 15 league appearances, with one additional goal and assist in the UEFA Champions League last term. It was little compared to the impressive form the former Lille OSC man had been in with Newcastle United prior to the move.

7. Peguy Luyindula

5 of 11

Signed from bitter rivals Marseille in January of 2007 after an unproductive loan spell with Levante UD in Spain, Peguy Luyindula managed just three goals and a sending off in 14 Ligue 1 appearances that season.

However, the Frenchman stayed for four more campaigns afterwards and bagged 16 goals, saving him from being considered one of the worst January signings in the history of the club.

6. Marcelo Gallardo

6 of 11

Signed on a free transfer in January 2007, big things were expected of Marcelo Gallardo after his spell with AS Monaco in-between two stints with formative club River Plate.

However, two goals in 13 appearances were not what was expected from the flamboyant Argentinian playmaker.

Gallardo would feature nine more times for PSG in Ligue 1 before leaving without adding to those two goals.

5. David Beckham

7 of 11

The much-travelled David Beckham ended his storied career in Paris with a six-month stint at PSG.

Expected to contribute towards Les Parisiens’ push to become a new European superpower on and off the pitch, Beckham’s two assists in 10 Ligue 1 games was a disappointing return from the Englishman.

4. Sergey Semak

8 of 11

Signed in 2006 after a hat-trick for CSKA Moscow in a 3-1 win at Parc des Princes in the UEFA Champions League, Sergey Semak will go down as one of the all-time PSG flops.

The Russian featured 13 times, scoring just once and failing to lay on any before the end of the 2005-06 campaign.

Semak featured 13 more times for the club in Le Championnat and then left to return to Russia.

3. Willamis de Souza Silva

9 of 11

Slightly more successful than compatriot Everton Santos, who arrived at the same time as him, Willamis de Souza Silva played 12 times for PSG in Ligue 1 and provided just one assist.

The Brazilian would not feature at all the next season and was loaned to Gremio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense before making the move permanent.

2. Ronan Le Crom

10 of 11

A January 2012 arrival after Carlo Ancelotti decided that he wanted an experienced third choice goalkeeper, Ronan Le Crom enjoyed a one and a half season stay at Parc des Princes.

Unfortunately for Le Crom, he was given a straight red card after just 20 minutes of his only appearance for PSG, a 2-0 win away at FC Lorient on the final day of the 2012-13 season.

It was the final game of his career.

1. Everton Santos

11 of 11

Acquired in January of 2008, along with Souza, Everton Santos famously made just one appearance in Ligue 1 for PSG over the three seasons he technically belonged to the club for.

Loaned out to Japanese, Brazilian and South Korean clubs before finally leaving Parc des Princes, Santos is one of the capital club’s worst ever signings, let alone a poor January buy.
