Manchester United Transfer News: Latest David De Gea and Edinson Cavani Rumours
David de Gea feels unappreciated at Manchester United and is playing a waiting game regarding his future with the club amid longstanding from Real Madrid.
That’s according to Jose Felix Diaz of Marca, who insists that while the Spanish international remains content at Old Trafford, the goalkeeper has lofty ambitions:
"De Gea, meanwhile, is waiting for United to blink first. He is happy in Manchester, having won over the fans, his teammates and the critics, but he wants to be appreciated - and to win trophies.
That much is self-evident to all and sundry who have come into contact with him. Staying with the Red Devils remains his first choice, but the clock is ticking and Real cast a long shadow.

It’s difficult to go along with the narrative that De Gea is not revered in the manner he should be. The 24-year-old has been rightly heralded as one of the best up-and-coming goalkeepers in European football. Indeed, former United defender Gary Neville named the ‘keeper as his player of the season so far at the campaign’s mid-point, per Matchbook.com:
Plenty wax lyrical about his magnificent displays between the sticks and, after another virtuoso display against Queens Park Rangers, even Louis van Gaal was happy the lavish De Gea with praise.
“I think he's been playing well all this season,” said the United manager, per BBC Sport. “We have a lot of clean sheets and that is mainly down to him.”

Encouragingly for the Red Devils fans, the piece makes it clear United remain De Gea’s preferred long-term option. Amid plenty of transfer talk regarding some exciting attacking acquisitions, it also seems as though the club’s fanbase is unanimous in its willingness for the Spaniard to remain at the club, per Bleacher Report UK:
You suspect the club delegates are equally as keen and will be desperate for the goalkeeper to put pen to paper on a deal. But ultimately the decision rests with the player; if United get to a point by which De Gea has less than 12 months remaining on his contract, the club are going to be in a very difficult situation and could be prompted to cash in.

Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe takes a look at some of the other rumours lingering at Old Trafford:
Reports in France suggest United could receive a boost in their reported pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani. As noted by Ben Jefferson of the Express, the Uruguayan has been touted as a target for the Red Devils and, according to l’Equipe (h/t Jonathan Johnson), he could well be on his way out of the French capital:
The French paper also claims the Red Devils are willing to sign their on-loan forward Radamel Falcao on a permanent deal in order to swap him with the PSG No. 9, per 101 Great Goals, although the potential logistics of such a deal make that a very unlikely switch.

Here’s a look at what Cavani could add to United’s cause:
If it’s between Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cavani to be ousted—while the latter is the younger player and better long-term option—you suspect it’ll be the former who comes out on top. It’s not a ploy that Johnson necessarily agrees with, though:
Subsequently, a top-class striker could be on the market come the end of the campaign and with Falcao’s long-term future at Old Trafford clouded, Cavani is a player who could be an ideal replacement. Stylistically he’s completely different to the Colombian, but at the sharp end of the pitch, there’s plenty he could add to the team’s attacking forays.

PSG may have other plans for him though, per Robin Bairner of Goal.com:
With Rooney and Van Persie both arguably past their best, there could be a need to spruce up the club’s forward line. And while Cavani would bring an extra dimension to the club’s array of offensive talent, he’ll be 28 at the end of this season and will most likely cost a sizeable amount.
While the need to invest in a striker is not unavoidably pressing at this juncture, if Van Gaal is going to draft in forward options, then it’s imperative that they are just prior to or at the peak of their powers. That way United can reap the longevity of such players and with that in mind, the club should pursue other options aside from Cavani at the end of the current campaign.
