Preview and Prediction
It's safe to say that Seattle had a pretty scary outing against the Packers in the NFC Championship Game. The Seahawks aren't exactly used to finding themselves on the losing end of the scoreboard often—especially at home—but that was exactly the case until just one-and-a-half minutes remained in Sunday's contest.
Green Bay got off to a roaring start due to several miscues by Seattle. A Russell Wilson interception led to the Packers' first three points, and Green Bay notched another three on the ensuing possession following a Doug Baldwin fumble. Seattle's quarterback didn't help his team throughout the remainder of the half, tossing two more picks and entering the break down 16-0.
This was an unfamiliar situation for the Seahawks, but they rose to the challenge and produced an exciting and impressive second half.
Wilson orchestrated three touchdown drives during the game's final two quarters and capped off the game with a 35-yard scoring strike to Jermaine Kearse in overtime. ESPN's Ed Werder relayed a comment from head coach Pete Carroll regarding the contest's last play:
That has been Seattle's catalyst all season long—Wilson's ability to ad-lib. Yes, the team's defense has been phenomenal and Marshawn Lynch continues to punish opposing defenses, but this third-year quarterback remained confident in his ability and managed to defeat one of the NFL's best teams after throwing four interceptions.
Now, that's impressive, and Kearse commented on his quarterback's mentality throughout the game, via the Seahawks' official website:
Wilson's poise against Green Bay is what gives Seattle a chance of defeating New England. After all, the Patriots are a very good football team, and they proved they can put teams in early holes on Sunday. We may witness Wilson climbing out of another one in the Super Bowl.
On the other hand, the Patriots have one of the NFL's all-time greats under center. Tom Brady is a future Hall of Famer who needs no introduction. He is playing ageless football right now and just completed 23 of his 35 passing attempts for 226 yards, three touchdowns and one interception for a passer rating of 100.4 against a Colts secondary that had been lights out in two previous playoff games.
Brady is known for his ability to remain cool under pressure, and that's resulted in five previous Super Bowl appearances. According to NFL Network's Albert Breer, the veteran signal-caller is about to set a new league record:
One big reason Brady is able to succeed in these situations is his intelligence and ability to quickly adapt to schematic adjustments.
In the divisional round, the Patriots couldn't find running room against the Baltimore Ravens—rushing for 14 yards—and Brady was forced to air it out 50 times. Sunday, New England was a run-heavy offense featuring LeGarrette Blount, yet Brady remained efficient and in rhythm. Combined with the ever-changing packages of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, this is a tough scheme to decipher for any defense.
If there is one offense in the NFL that could keep Seattle's top-ranked defense on its heels, it's the Patriots.
Awarding the upper hand to either team at this point is extremely difficult. Both are well-built squads from top to bottom with very few weaknesses. Still, there can be only one victor, and this time around, the Lombardi Trophy will go to Seattle.
The Seahawks were trouncing very good teams before miscues led to a close one on Sunday. Expect Wilson and Co. to learn from their mistakes and focus on ball security against New England. This will mark two in a row for Seattle and usher in the dynasty discussion.
Prediction: Seahawks 27, Patriots 24
