Dexter Williams to Notre Dame: Fighting Irish Land 4-Star RB Prospect
Dexter Williams was originally destined to play his college football at Miami before opting to reconsider his options. Now he's decided to suit up for Notre Dame.
Tom Loy of 247Sports.com passed along word of the running back's choice:
Williams is a 4-star prospect who ranks inside the top 100 nationally for the Class of 2015, based on 247Sports' composite rankings. The outlet also notes he checks in as a top-15 option at the position and received interest from more than a dozen programs.
As mentioned, he made a commitment to Miami earlier in the recruiting process. He then announced his decision to leave the Hurricanes' incoming class:
The West Orange High School star is an intriguing talent who's showcased big-play ability with quick cuts and speed to burn once he reaches the second level. His frame (6'0'', 192 pounds) also suggests he can run between the tackles, though he could benefit from bulking up further.
One other thing he's shown is patience in the backfield. He's willing to wait an extra beat for a hole to open up before making his move, a skill bolstered by good acceleration.
Jamie Uyeyama from SonOfACoach.com was impressed with how tough he runs:
"He runs hard and frequently breaks arm tackles to maximize yardage. He is consistently fighting for more yards and making people miss on the second level. It’s rare to see him knocked back. He always seems to be falling forward at the end of his runs.
"
The best way to describe Williams is a player where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. He's not the most explosive runner in the class and he's not the most punishing runner, either. But he rates very well in most areas.
One thing he could benefit from in the early stages of his college career is getting more acclimated with the passing game. That would brighten his future further in terms of developing into a complete three-down back.
He's ready to play a rotational role right away. Whether he will be able to win some immediate playing time is unknown, but it would help his development.
All told, by the time Williams is an upperclassman he should be a vital part of the offense. The question is how quickly he can reach that level.
