Super Bowl 2015: Updated Odds and Predictions Ahead of Divisional Round

R. Cory SmithJan 5, 2015

One weekend into the playoffs, four teams are now closer to making their way to the Super Bowl. The next destination, however, is much more difficult than the first test in the Wild Card Round.

All of the franchises that advanced out of the opening round will now travel to take on either the No. 1 or 2 seed in their conference. That means traveling to some of the toughest stadiums, like CenturyLink Field and Gillette Stadium.

Ultimately, only two teams will accomplish the ultimate goal of reaching the Super Bowl, and just one will come away with the title. Before the second round of the playoffs get underway, here's a look at the updated Super Bowl odds and predictions for the final game.

Super Bowl Prediction: New England Patriots vs. Green Bay Packers

Here's the thing, there might have been some cheating in my earlier prediction. Leading up to the Wild Card Round, the two teams chosen were already through to the second round, so neither have changed this week.

The Green Bay Packers have yet to take the field in January, but they still have a distinct advantage. Thanks to a strong regular season, Green Bay will be playing at Lambeau Field for its opening game.

However, the Packers do face a team that has been similarly as strong on the road, via Peter Schrager of Fox Sports:

Having Aaron Rodgers, along with a full repertoire of weapons, makes Green Bay's offense one of the most explosive in the playoffs. Jordy Nelson became the first Packers receiver to eclipse 1,500 yards this season, while Eddie Lacy put up nearly identical numbers to his 2013 campaign.

The only hiccup, of course, might be the health of Rodgers. After suffering a calf injury in the season finale, Rodgers spoke about his ailment and current condition, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com.

"The calf is slowly progressing," Rodgers said Friday. "I wasn't out there today, but yeah, we're right where we need to be in getting ready to hopefully get on the field next week."

On the other side of the bracket, the Patriots look like the juggernaut in the AFC. Tom Brady under center hasn't led the Pats to a ton of success recently, but he has the weapons around him, like Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman, to lead the way.

Unlike the Packers, New England holds home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. That puts the Patriots in a great spot after a dominant season at Gillette, via Ben Volin of The Boston Globe:

Both teams have an all-around team to make the Super Bowl, but the road isn't exactly easy. New England might have to face the Denver Broncos, with Peyton Manning hoping to get revenge from the regular season. The Packers, well, they might have to travel back to Seattle, the site of a blowout loss from the season opener.

After battling those demons, expect both historic franchises to battle each other on Feb. 1. At the end of the season, it will be the Packers hoisting the Lombardi Trophy—like it should be.

Prediction: Packers 34, Patriots 27
