Real Madrid Transfer News: Latest Rumours Say Marco Reus to Sign for Galacticos

Rob BlanchetteJan 3, 2015

As one of the hottest attackers on the planet, Marco Reus has been the subject of many rumours in the past 12 months with his Borussia Dortmund career in doubt. But it seems that Real Madrid have now won the battle to sign the German international, as fresh reports confirm Los Blancos are close to capturing the player.

Chisanga Malata of the Daily Star has proclaimed the Galacticos will make Reus their next star signing, with the player agreeing to join the Champions League holders.

Reus has been the subject of interest from Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool, per Malata, but has decided his future lies at the Bernabeu.

Malata says a fee of £35 million has been agreed between BVB and Madrid, according to Spanish sources, but neither club has currently confirmed the transfer is set in stone.

The news will also come as a shock to ex-Los Blancos coach Jose Mourinho after it was reported the Special One had instructed Chelsea to purchase the player in January.

Bruce Archer of the Daily Star reported on New Year's Eve that French reports believed Roman Abramovich would get his chequebook out to capture the 25-year-old, boosting the Blues' Premier League title challenge.

But Archer also quoted former coach of Bayern Munich and Madrid Jupp Heynckes speaking about Reus' potential final destination, saying the player should leave Germany for Spain:

"

I would recommend him to go to Madrid. The Bayern Munich already has four or five world class players before. Where to play Reus? If he really has a clause of € 25 million, all the great teams of Europe should do everything to attract services Reus.

"

Reus has seen his current Bundesliga campaign reduced to just 588 playing minutes this season due to injury, per WhoScored.com. Surely that has been a factor in BVB's alarming slide down the German table into a relegation dogfight.

But last season, the player continued his hot streak, scoring 21 times in the domestic league and Champions League competitions, while he also provided 12 assists, per WhoScored.com.

Reus is spectacular when in full flow, and his play very much resembles a ready-made Galactico. But Madrid currently have a wealth of attacking talent, meaning someone will have to sit on the bench—and that player could be Reus himself, unless he delivers fast.

Waddah Hassani of Soccerlens.com believes Florentino Perez will be attracted to Reus due to his price tag. And, despite the collection of attackers in his squad, he will see Reus as one for the future:

"

So, is Marco Reus an essential player that Real Madrid can not function without? No. But is he a player Real Madrid need in order to maintain their front-line’s high level in the deep end of the season and provide a starting alternative in the near future? Yes.

Hassani is correct in his assessments—and, at the price quoted, Reus will be something of a bargain.

Madrid like to collect marquee players like they are going out of fashion, and if the German is part of the squad, he is no danger to them on an opponent's team.

But can Reus make an impression ahead of Gareth Bale or Los Blancos' superstar contingent? Only time can answer that question. But the player certainly has the ability to light up the Spanish capital with his trickery and his goals.
