Anthony Could Be Shut Down At Some Point

Friday, Jan. 2

The New York Knicks haven't had anything to cheer about this season, so news that Carmelo Anthony is on the bench again with knee problems will only make things worse.

Anthony, the Knicks' leading scorer at 23.9 points per game, sat out Friday's 97-81 home loss to Detroit thanks to soreness in his left knee.

Ian Begley of ESPN.com provided comments from head coach Derek Fisher, who suggested Anthony could be shelved for the season at some point:

"

With the Knicks in the midst of a throwaway season, coach Derek Fisher has acknowledged the possibility that Carmelo Anthony might eventually sit out the remainder of the campaign due to a knee injury. ...

"From the conversations I've been a part of, I think everybody is smart enough to realize, calendar wise, timing wise, that there may come a point that that's the decision that needs to be made," Fisher said Friday. "But [we realize] that we can't force Carmelo to that point just yet.

"

Anthony has been battling knee problems virtually all season, but recently told ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne that he intends to play as much as possible:

"

It's tough. Some days you're able to do some things, some days you're not. Some days it's tough to even run around and cut and jump. And then other days I come in and I don't really feel it.

I'm playing because I love to play and I want to play. I know what I can tolerate and what I can't tolerate. The games I feel like I can't tolerate it, I'm not going to play.

"

Anthony has been a steady presence when he's been on the court, yet the Knicks are still among the worst teams in the league. In addition to being fifth in the NBA in scoring, the 30-year-old is averaging 6.6 rebounds per game.
