Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Seamus Coleman, Memphis Depay Rumours

Rob BlanchetteDec 30, 2014

Recent links about Seamus Coleman joining Manchester United appear to be unfounded after Everton manager Roberto Martinez strongly rejected claims the defender will depart Goodison Park.

Andrew Horgan of Goal.com quoted the Spaniard addressing the recent transfer rumours about his full-back during Tuesday's press conference. Martinez insists the player is not about to leave Everton in the near future:

"

For me that’s nothing [recent speculation about Coleman]. There is nothing for me to comment really, I haven’t seen that, I have no recollection of that.

As you can imagine what we want at the football club is to build something special and to make us stronger so the last thing we want to do is lose important players so no there has been no contact.

Bruce Archer of the Daily Star had reported United would make a £25 million bid for Coleman as Louis van Gaal looks to further reshape his defence in January.

Coleman has seen his reputation rapidly grow in the past few seasons and the Irishman has blossomed under Martinez. But at the quoted price, United could surely get a whole lot more for their money if they decided to splash out in the forthcoming window.

Coleman has once again featured heavily for the Toffees during the current campaign, featuring in 16 games in the Premier League, per Squawka.com, scoring twice and creating 17 chances.

United have suffered at right-back during Van Gaal's short reign—with Rafael constantly on the injury list forcing Antonio Valencia into defensive duties.

In further news, United's chances of purchasing Dutch ace Memphis Depay appear to hinge on the club making it back into the Champions League next season.

Will Giles of the Metro quotes the player speaking to Voetbal International about his future, with Depay claiming he could be playing with one of Europe's elite teams:

"Maybe I will play in the Champions League next season with PSV, maybe it will be with another great club. I do not plan, I just want to make steps in my career."

Depay had a tremendous World Cup under LvG at the World Cup for the Netherlands and the experienced coach knows all about the talent he possesses.

PSV coach Phillip Cocu confirmed in November that Depay will indeed leave the club in the near future while speaking to Helden, per Anthony Chapman of the Express:

"

Of course Memphis will be sold, you can't stop that but it's okay. It's great you can build up a player like him, who breaks through, succeeds at PSV then leaves the club when he's ready for a bigger step. That's great.

I really thought it would be the best for him if he stayed here with us. It's important for him to play around fifty matches in a season before he makes the next step. Nothing else makes you a better player than a lot of games. He can become way better, he's so explosive.

"

United have made huge leaps in terms of adding talent in the past six months, and this is reflected in their burgeoning wage bill. The capture of Depay and Coleman would fit their current mandate to sign the best players available.

Football finance blogger Swiss Rambler recently described United's wages as possibly now the highest in world football, with The Telegraph's chief sports writer Paul Hayward complimenting the analysis:

Depay is the type of player who could explode at United. The club plays the type of football that would give the player the platform he richly deserves.

Van Gaal knows Depay well and would be able to utilise him in his favoured positions, helping to build a dynamic side at Old Trafford.

But Depay's possible arrival could spell trouble for the club's No. 7 Adnan Januzaj—who is already struggling for game time as LvG's team remains on a strong unbeaten run.

Coleman would also fit in at United but it his highly questionable whether the player is worth £25 million, even when on his best form.

He is one of the most electric right-backs in the Premier League but the price appears steep, even in today's inflated marketplace.
