Liverpool Transfer News: Top Rumours on Ezequiel Lavezzi, Xherdan Shaqiri, More

Tom SunderlandDec 29, 2014

Pressure is mounting on Brendan Rodgers ahead of the January window as the Liverpool manager once again enters the transfer cauldron with weight on his shoulders to bring new inspiration to the Reds.

Ezequiel Lavezzi and Xherdan Shaqiri are among those wing wizards rumoured to be on the Merseyside club's radar, while ex-Everton boss David Moyes is hoping to add Emre Can to his ranks at Real Sociedad.

Paris Saint-Germain maestro Lavezzi has long been associated with a Parc des Princes exit, and according to Jamie Anderson of the Daily Express, he will be permitted to leave for just £17 million.

Speculation of Lavezzi's exit from the French capital club intensified on Monday after Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t World Soccer Talk) reported the wide man had gone missing in Paris:

The Argentine's PSG deal expires in 18 months, but Jonathan Johnson of ESPN FC insists a January departure—either temporary or permanent—is not on the cards:

Johnson adds that Inter are one of the parties seriously interested in taking former Napoli star Lavezzi back to Serie A, noting the conditions under which the Ligue 1 champions should consider cashing in:

Lavezzi would likely require a hefty investment and boast a large salary, but Bayern Munich's Shaqiri could be a more cost-effective option with lower wage demands.

However, Liverpool are close to missing out on the Swiss sensation, too, with Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t Squawka) claiming a loan move to Juventus is close to completion.

BT Sport's Raphael Honigstein backs up the reports:

With that being said, 10 of Shaqiri's 15 appearances across all competitions this season have come from the bench, and his reputation as nothing more than a fringe asset at the Allianz Arena has hardly evolved.

In November, Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer told German channel Sport1 (h/t Daily Mail's Nicholas Godden) 23-year-old Shaqiri would be free to depart this winter: "Bayern have already sent out a signal and indicated to him that he can probably go in the winter break, when he wants. I think it's a shame because he is a great talent."

David Amoyal of GianlucaDiMarzio.com argues that Lavezzi is the far more proven asset of the two wingers when compared with Shaqiri, whom he describes as a "blank canvas."

Liverpool may yet stage a last-minute move for the pint-sized puppeteer, but Serie A champions Juve may understandably present a more amicable option at present, especially on loan terms.

Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe assessed Shaqiri's options ahead of the January transfer window and the impact he could have upon making the switch away from Germany's giants:

On the departure list, out-of-favour midfielder Emre Can could leave Rodgers' ranks in a temporary deal of his own this winter, with former Merseyside rival Moyes lurking.

Now at the helm of La Real, Moyes wants to take the former Bayer Leverkusen prodigy on loan for the rest of the season, according to the Daily Mirror's John Cross.

Can came to Anfield as one of the club's first investments this past summer and brought with him a great deal of hype following reviews as one of the Bundesliga's brightest up-and-coming talents.

Rodgers has handed the midfielder only three Premier League starts in his maiden campaign, but the opportunity to give the 20-year-old a La Liga loan may be useful to all involved.

Liverpool have leaned largely on a midfield trio of Jordan Henderson, Steven Gerrard and Joe Allen this season.

If Rodgers believes Lucas Leiva can offer suitable backup, allowing Can a temporary switch may strike as a good move, although the 10th-place Reds may not be in a position to allow any players their exit.
