Manuel Neuer Reportedly Could Miss Rest of Season with Broken Foot

Matt JonesApr 18, 2017

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer suffered a broken foot during his side's 4-2 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg on Tuesday, and he could be out for the rest of the season, per Mark Lovell for ESPN FC.

Bayern confirmed the injury, but would only say Neuer was set for "a lengthy spell out."

The Germany international is regarded by many as the best goalkeeper in the world, but Bayern may have to do without their stopper for some time after it was revealed on the club website (in German) that he picked up a fracture on his left foot at the Santiago Bernabeu:

Although the extent of the injury is yet to be confirmed, that means the German champions could be without Neuer for all of their five remaining Bundesliga matches and the upcoming DFB Pokal semi-final against Borussia Dortmund on April 26.

Neuer, who has been part of a remarkable Bayern side, will be an especially tough player to replace. His brand of goalkeeping has been engrossing to watch, and it's inevitable that the Bundesliga team will be worse off without the World Cup winner between the sticks—any side on the planet would be.

Here's a look at some of Neuer's best moments during his time at the club.

The German is a classic "sweeper 'keeper," and his ability to nullify opposition counter-attacks with quick decision-making is vital to the way Bayern play.

As such, he's probably the most irreplaceable member of Carlo Ancelotti's squad.

Tom Starke is the man likely to step in should Neuer be sidelined, and while he's proved himself to be a solid operator between the sticks, not having the world's best goalkeeper in situ would be a major blow to Bayern with a crucial spell of matches approaching.
