UFC Fight Night 58 Results: Matches to Make for the Entire Fight Card

Sean SmithDec 28, 2014

Following a strong effort against Chris Weidman in July, Lyoto Machida took his first step last Saturday toward a rematch with the champion.

It took Machida 62 seconds to put C.B. Dollaway down. The Dragon landed a brutal kick to Dollaway’s body and followed up with punches to end the bout quickly.

Heading into the weekend, Dollaway had won two in a row and made an unexpected run into the middleweight rankings. On Saturday, we learned that The Doberman still isn't quite ready to be a serious contender.

With another UFC event in the books, here is a look at the matchups that should be next for Machida,  Dollaway and the rest of the UFC Fight Night 58 competitors.

Antonio dos Santos

2 of 13

Matchup: Shinsho Anzai

Antonio dos Santos' UFC debut was going well until he suffered a finger injury one minute into the second round.

Facing The Ultimate Fighter Brazil veteran Daniel Sarafian on short notice, Dos Santos started strong, landing 13 more significant strikes than his opponent in the opening round. Also shutting down two takedown attempts, Dos Santos appeared to clearly win the first stanza.

However, as he blocked a punch early in the second frame, Dos Santos dislocated a finger. Before Dos Santos was able to attempt to pop his finger back into place, referee Eduardo Herdy called a stop to the contest, which was declared a knockout win for Sarafian.

It was a tough loss to swallow for Dos Santos, but he'll surely get another opportunity. A bout with Shinsho Anzai would give him a good chance to get into the UFC win column.

Daniel Sarafian

3 of 13

Matchup: Omari Akhmedov vs. Mats Nilsson Winner

With back-to-back losses heading into UFC Fight Night 58, Sarafian may have needed a win to keep his UFC career going.

If so, luck was certainly on Sarafian's side last Saturday. The Brazilian started very slow, landing fewer strikes than Dos Santos and failing on two takedowns attempts during the opening round. The second round didn't really have a chance to play out before it happened.

Sarafian threw a punch that was blocked, but it was still damaging. The strike appeared to dislocate Dos Santos' finger, resulting in a stop to the contest.

"

VICTORY! I'll admit it wasn't the way I wanted, but a victory is a victory, just as rules are rules… http://t.co/ff7Yiv9xX9

— Daniel Sarafian (@danielsarafian) December 22, 2014"

Due to the nature of his victory, Sarafian isn't likely to get a big step up in competition, but he should remain on the UFC roster for a while longer. As he looks to build job security, Sarafian could meet the winner of a UFC 182 bout between Omari Akhmedov and Mats Nilsson.

Mike Rhodes

4 of 13

Matchup: Joe Riggs

Things did not go well for Mike Rhodes at UFC Fight Night 58. The Roufusport member was only able to land two significant strikes before being submitted by Erick Silva.

With an 0-3 record inside the Octagon, Rhodes could be on his way back to smaller shows.

"

Mike Rhodes. Massive disappointment in the UFC. Just never put it together. Time for the scissors.

— Fight_Ghost (@Fight_Ghost) December 21, 2014"

I wouldn't be so sure Rhodes is going to get cut now, though. At 25 years old, he still has a lot of potential. Additionally, this matchup with Silva was not a typical must-win bout, as nobody expected Rhodes to come away with the victory.

Should Rhodes get one more shot, a bout with veteran Joe Riggs could put him on the map.

Erick Silva

5 of 13

Matchup: Jake Ellenberger vs. Josh Koscheck Winner

Following a loss to Matt Brown, Silva needed a strong showing to remain on the fringe of title contention.

Opposite an opponent without a UFC win, Silva was able to put his skill on display at UFC Fight Night 58. The Brazilian scored an early takedown and took care of business in less than two minutes by locking up a submission with an arm triangle.

"

Have we reached the part of the evening when dudes say "ERICK SILVA IS BACK" because they don't understand what a showcase fight is?

— Jonathan Snowden (@mmaencyclopedia) December 21, 2014"

It should be back to big fights for Silva, who the UFC continues to push more than any other Brazilian welterweight. A bout with the winner of a February matchup between Jake Ellenberger and Josh Koscheck could be interesting.

Elias Silverio

6 of 13

Matchup: Diego Ferreira

Elias Silverio got out to a strong start in the world's top MMA promotion with a 3-0 UFC record, but he ran into an even stronger up-and-comer at UFC Fight Night 58.

The Brazilian was outstruck in all three rounds before being stopped in the final stanza. With seconds remaining, Silverio was clocked with a left hook and couldn't recover to take the bout to the scorecards.

Also coming off of a loss following a strong start to his UFC career, Diego Ferreira is in a similar position to Silverio. A bout between the Brazilians would be logical.

Rashid Magomedov

7 of 13

Matchup: Diego Sanchez

Now 3-0 inside the Octagon, Magomedov has shown he's a lightweight to be taken seriously.

"

— MMAjunkie (@MMAjunkie) December 21, 2014"

Following two decision victories, Magomedov scored his first UFC stoppage win by knocking Silverio out at UFC Fight Night 58. The Russian is not overly young for a rising prospect, being 30 years old, so it's time to start testing him.

A matchup with former title challenger Diego Sanchez would be a good indicator of whether Magomedov is ready to compete with Top 15 lightweights or not.

Antonio Carlos Jr.

8 of 13

Matchup: Ilir Latifi

After winning TUF Brazil, Antonio Carlos Jr. was matched up with fellow up-and-coming light heavyweight Patrick Cummins last Saturday.

The bout revealed some holes Carlos Jr. will have to work on in order to reach his full potential. While Carlos Jr. threatened Cummins with submissions, he spent too much time underneath his opponent and ended up falling on the scorecards.

Being only 24 years old, Carlos Jr. has a lot of time to turn things around. He might get a chance to do so opposite Ilir Latifi, who is also coming off of a loss.

Patrick Cummins

9 of 13

Matchup: Ryan Jimmo

Since being thrown to the wolves in a UFC debut matchup with Daniel Cormier, Cummins has looked like a potential light heavyweight contender.

In beating Carlos Jr. at UFC Fight Night 58, Cummins extended his winning streak to three fights. He's more than proven he belongs on the UFC roster and should start to see bigger bouts coming his way soon.

"

Congrats @OfficialDurkin awesome work! #UFCbrazil pic.twitter.com/Z3TAKKAXWq

— KailinCurran (@KailinCurran) December 21, 2014"

He's been impressive, but Cummins could probably use one more win over a proven veteran before being tested by a Top 15 light heavyweight. A matchup with Ryan Jimmo would be a good contest to determine whether he is ready or not.

Mitch Gagnon

10 of 13

Matchup: Ulka Sasaki

With four straight wins, Mitch Gagnon earned a huge opportunity to compete against former bantamweight champion Renan Barao.

Of course, along with that chance to become a top 135-pound contender came a huge mountain to climb. Ultimately, Gagnon was not able to pull off the upset and suffered a submission loss in the third round.

"

.@MitchGagnonUFC is giving Barao a better fight than Faber did in both fights

— Adam Martin (@MMAdamMartin) December 21, 2014"

It was still a respectable showing by Gagnon, who should have the skill to get another shot at an elite bantamweight somewhere down the road. However, he'll first have to work his way back up the ladder again.

A matchup with fellow UFC Fight Night 58 loser Ulka Sasaki should give him a good chance to get back into the win column.

Renan Barao

11 of 13

Matchup: T.J. Dillashaw

Barao squandered an opportunity to reclaim his belt from T.J. Dillashaw due to issues with cutting weight in August, but he's right back in the hunt for that rematch following his win over Gagnon.

With Dominick Cruz back in the mix, it looked like Barao would need to take a longer road back to another title shot. However, with injuries suffered by Cruz and Raphael Assuncao, it's now looking like Barao could get that title shot via process of elimination.

"

— #TheTimeIsNow (@ufc) December 21, 2014"

At the moment, Barao looks like the only elite bantamweight available and willing to challenge Dillashaw. Like it or not, that rematch is going to be coming sooner rather than later.

C.B. Dollaway

12 of 13

Matchup: Tim Kennedy

With a win over Francis Carmont in May, Dollaway deserved a big fight, but he clearly isn't ready to compete with the best of the best in the middleweight division.

In 62 seconds, Machida was able to shut Dollaway down with a heavy kick to the body. Before Dollaway could recover, referee Jerin Valel was forced to stop the bout.

"

C.B. Dollaway disappointed with loss: I was basically paralyzed after Lyoto Machida’s kick http://t.co/fqLZS3og3n pic.twitter.com/RQsJyFltql

— Bloody Elbow (@BloodyElbow) December 22, 2014"

Despite the loss, Dollaway remains a Top 10 UFC middleweight and should now meet another ranked 185-pounder coming off of a loss. Tim Kennedy fits that description and would provide an interesting stylistic matchup against Dollaway.

Lyoto Machida

13 of 13

Matchup: Luke Rockhold

Machida looks to be on his way to another title shot in the middleweight division.

At UFC Fight Night 58, The Dragon made it look easy against Dollaway. Before even facing a takedown attempt, Machida blasted Dollaway with a kick to the body, which brought an early end to the bout.

"

Morning matchmaker: Lyoto Machida vs. Luke Rockhold seems likely http://t.co/epamH1Gl3C #UFC @lyotomachidafw pic.twitter.com/vbCZNJ3tZl

— UFCONFOX (@UFCONFOX) December 22, 2014"

With so much depth in the 185-pound class, Machida is going to need at least one more win before he earns another shot at the middleweight championship. A bout with Luke Rockhold, who has won three in a row, could set Machida up for a rematch with Chris Weidman (should Weidman remain champion).
