WWE Rumors: Examining Latest Buzz Around Undertaker, Sting and More

Ryan DilbertDec 17, 2014

WWE doesn't appear to have an Undertaker and Sting collision at WrestleMania in mind.

Instead, The Deadman has a younger predator waiting for him on the horizon. An update of those plans headlines the latest batch of WWE rumors. As for Sting, the only thing certain about him is what the company wants everyone to call him.

In other rumors, WWE looks to be putting a physical Hall of Fame together, and Shelton Benjamin dispels word that he's headed back.

We begin with the former story. Although WWE hasn't made an announcement, there's evidence that it is doing the groundwork on a Hall of Fame that fans can visit.

Hall of Fame

According to F4WOnline (h/t WrestlingInc) WWE is reportedly working on a physical Hall of Fame in the Orlando, Florida, area.

For now, the WWE Hall of Fame consists of an annual ceremony and an abstract idea. Fans can't wander the halls looking at busts of Andre the Giant and Bob Backlund. That may soon change.

American Top Team co-founder Dan Lambert told MMAFighting.com that WWE acquired Bruno Sammartino's old WWWF world title from him. He said the following:

"

That was probably my best belt, but when WWE decided to do their brick-and-mortar Hall of Fame they wanted the belt so bad for their HOF. And the guy that got it for me, he makes their belts. So they were like, hey, we really need this belt. So I gave it to them and they gave me a couple of other belts in return.

"

Unless Lambert somehow misinterpreted why officials wanted that title from him, WWE is quietly gathering key pieces for an actual Hall of Fame.

There is no word on how long that process would take. The fact that officials haven't said anything publicly suggests it's a project in its earliest stages.

Hopefully by the time it is erected Randy Savage will have taken his rightful place among the inductees.

Sting's Nickname

Sting is not The Icon, The Stinger or The Franchise. At least not in WWE.

Fans may have noticed that Seth Rollins, Dolph Ziggler and others have referred to him as The Vigilante. That is no accident.

Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t WrestleZone) that WWE has issued a directive for Superstars and announcers to use the "Vigilante" nickname whenever referring to Sting. Meltzer notes that there are no exceptions.

WWE's desire to put its own touch on Sting is understandable. He's too well-established to change his name altogether or alter his gimmick, but the company doesn't want to just rehash who he was at WCW or TNA.

Now that his nickname is settled, the question that remains concerns what WWE has planned for him. Of course the natural enemy of a vigilante is authority.

The World's Greatest Tag Team Update

Don't get out your old World's Great Tag Team T-shirts just yet. Despite the rumblings invading the Internet, Benjamin and Charlie Haas aren't planning a WWE comeback.

Rumors of Benjamin making his way back caught fire when outlets such as WrestlingInc (h/t DailyDDT.com) noted that WWE had re-filed a trademark for Benjamin's name, as reported by VerticalNews (h/t 4 Traders).

When asked directly about those rumors in an interview with Title Match Wrestling, Benjamin let down all the fans holding out hope that The Gold Standard was set to rejoin WWE.

He didn't say he was opposed to the idea, but in his words he currently has "no plans of going back to WWE."

What about all the rumors we read over the past weeks? Benjamin says, "They are just rumors."

Undertaker vs. Bray Wyatt Update

Wyatt may get the opportunity that many expected Sting to get. A match pitting The Eater of Worlds against The Undertaker at WrestleMania 31 is rumored to be in the works.

According to F4WOnline (h/t Marc Middleton of WrestlingInc), that bout is by no means a lock, but WWE is proceeding with the idea that it needs to build up Wyatt for that match.

Bray Wyatt celebrates his win at TLC.

That would explain Wyatt defeating Dean Ambrose at TLC. It does not, however, explain why WWE chose to have that victory come by way of exploding TV.

If Wyatt is indeed the next guy to take on The Phenom at WrestleMania, WWE has some work to do. His feud with John Cena didn't elevate him as much as it should have, and knocking off an aging Chris Jericho is not exactly a career-maker.

He needs big wins, but they can't be the result of flukes like we saw at TLC.
