TUF 20 Finale Stock Report

Riley KontekDec 16, 2014

The Ultimate Fighter 20 is in the books, and the UFC has a new strawweight champion. The live finale followed up a long season full of fights, cattiness and the emergence of new players at 115 pounds.

The finale had its surprises and expectations. All in all, it was a great show that established new stars and momentum for the freshly minted UFC fighters.

So, who is up and who is down following the live finale? Let's take a look following the finale last Friday.

Up: Team Yin Yang

1 of 4

Known between the two great friends as "Team Yin Yang," Carla Esparza and Felice Herrig both had strong nights. Herrig earned her first finish since 2011, while Esparza, well, became the UFC champ.

Herrig's ground game was questioned during her time on the show and after she was submitted by Randa Markos via scarf-hold armlock. However, she tapped out Lisa Ellis, who has earned 13 wins by submission, with a beautiful armbar at the finale.

As for Esparza, despite being the top seed and the former Invicta champion, she was generally passed over by people who were picking the fight for Rose Namajunas. However, she proved why she's one of the best around, overwhelming Namajunas and tapping her out to earn the UFC gold.

All in all, Team Yin Yang made a statement Friday night.

Down: "Skrapettes"

2 of 4

The so-called "Skrapettes"—members of Team Melendezwere highly confident going into the TUF 20 Finale, but things backfired big time for both Bec Rawlings and Angela Magana.

Magana and Rawlings, generally seen as bullies and instigators during their time in the house, both came up short in their respective bouts. That followed some self-promoting behavior that ultimately hurt them more than helped them.

Magana, who dubbed herself "Your Majesty," became a Twitter "cult hero" by various trollish posts and pictures in the lead-up to the finale. She talked treated herself like a star, which grabbed the attention of UFC fans.

However, when it was time to back up her Twitter antics and claims, she became a 15-minute punching bag for Tecia Torres, one of her targets in the house. She wanted to be like a Chael Sonnen or a Conor McGregor from Twitter, but the problem is that Sonnen and McGregor were the best in their division, while Magana isn't even sniffing around the top 25 at this point.

As for Rawlings, she was not as big of an instigator or bully as Magana in the house and didn't match her teammate's attention-seeking behavior on Twitter. However, she was an enemy of opponent Heather Clark and turned a bunch of heads with her use of the middle finger during their staredown.

It became a chump move, as Clark outpointed her at the finale. Rawlings looked foolish by acting hard with her middle finger and then falling in what was an uninspired performance against the underdog, Clark.

It looks like the act is over, Skrapettes.

Up: Angela Hill

3 of 4

I will be the first person to admit my faults. I did not expect a whole lot out of Angela Hill, but boy, I misread that book.

Hill, a normal atomweight who failed to show a lot of potential in the house, opened up the card on UFC Fight Pass in dominating fashion. She avoided takedowns from the larger Emily Kagan and lit her up on the feet, making the fight lopsided.

It was the redemption she needed from an uneventful accounting on the show. It has helped gain her some notoriety and gives her momentum and experience going into her next UFC fight.

Down: Rose Namajunas

4 of 4

Listen, Rose Namajunas is a star in WMMA and a future champion. The only reason she's down is because of high expectations, which were bestowed up on her by Dana White.

White called Namajunas "the next Ronda Rousey." The problem is there is only one Rousey.

That declaration gave Namajunas all sorts of high expectations. She was picked by many in the MMA media to defeat Carla Esparza; however, she was handily defeated by the more rounded and experienced fighter.

Again, losing was not the end of the world for Namajunas. She still has a bright future. Now, she has to take a step back from the limelight, as being called the next Rousey was obviously an overstatement the likes of which Phillipe Nover is probably familiar with
