Top 10 Plays from 2014 Heisman Trophy Winner Marcus Mariota's Season
Marcus Mariota has been named the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner, a testament to the highlight-reel performances he displayed throughout the season.
The Oregon quarterback tallied 3,783 yards, 38 touchdowns and just two interceptions through the air, adding 669 yards and 14 scores on the ground.
Mariota led the Ducks into the inaugural College Football Playoff, where he's set to battle last year's Heisman winner Jameis Winston in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 at 5 p.m. ET.
Additionally, Bleacher Report's Matt Miller projects Mariota to be the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft should the dual-threat weapon forgo his senior season.
But before those exciting events take place, let's relive what Mariota accomplished during his Heisman-worthy 2014 campaign.
10. Tightropes by UCLA, Sparks Win
1 of 10Arizona had defeated Oregon nine days prior to the Ducks' meeting with UCLA, so Mariota needed to help the team rebound. However, the team was sluggish until Mariota capitalized on a fumble recovery.
On the first play after the takeaway, he made the correct decision in the zone read, bolted around the edge, tight-roped the sideline and extended the ball into the pylon for a touchdown.
Mariota sparked a stretch of Oregon reaching the end zone on five straight possessions, excluding the one-play drive before halftime.
He finished the day 17-of-27 for 210 passing yards and two touchdowns along with 75 rushing yards and two more scores. The 42-30 victory kickstarted an eight game-winning streak that still stands.
9. Fantastic Pocket Manipulation
2 of 10During the season-opener against South Dakota, Mariota showed outstanding footwork and vision near the goal line. The opponent doesn't matter, because this play is darn impressive.
He dropped back, looked at his first read—covered—found his checkdown option while stepping up in the pocket—covered—evaded another defender, located the line of scrimmage and then fired to an open receiver in the end zone.
So much happened in so little time, yet Mariota processed everything, created time for himself and kept his eyes downfield.
Mariota recorded 310 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in the blowout victory.
8. Game-Winner at Wazzu
3 of 10
Oregon struggled to pull away from lowly Washington State, but it sure wasn't Mariota's fault.
The Ducks defense surrendered nearly 500 yards, allowing Connor Halliday and Co. to scare Oregon until triple-zeros showed on the clock.
But Mariota continued to excel when his team relied on him most. He connected with Keanon Lowe for a six-yard touchdown to give Oregon a 38-31 advantage with 5:33 remaining.
Overall, Mariota racked up 387 total offensive yards and threw five touchdown passes, including an absolute bullet to Devon Allen for an 80-yard score earlier in the conference clash.
7. Mariota the Receiver
4 of 10Mariota's second career receiving touchdown would've been higher on the list, but he nearly turned the trick play into a turnover. That being said, he was still credited with the score, and that's what counts in the stat book.
Royce Freeman fired the pass to Mariota, who immediately absorbed the tackle attempt by Arizona's Jarvis McCall and stayed upright.
Jared Tevis ultimately stripped the ball away but not before Mariota crossed the plane with possession.
Though Oregon was upset 31-24, he managed 276 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Plus, Mariota had his revenge later in the year.
6. Somersaults Past the Pokes
5 of 10If this play doesn't debunk the "Mariota is a one-read quarterback" myth, then the disagreeing party simply cannot be convinced of the truth.
Mariota rode the fake, watched his first option, progressed to his No. 2, felt pressure, rolled right, tried looking for two different receivers while on the move and then finally decided to scramble for the pylon.
Running was his fifth option. He wanted to pass the ball, but nobody was open. So, he scampered for 19-yard score capped by a somersault instead.
The junior completed 19-of-23 attempts for 221 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 71 yards and two more scores during the 48-14 win over Wyoming.
5. Hurdles in the Civil War
6 of 10Mariota improved his record in the rivalry showdown to 3-0, and he accomplished it with a little flare. The Ducks ripped off 30 straight points, and Mariota provided the main highlight.
He completely avoided contact with Oregon State's Justin Strong except for pushing the Beavers' safety's helmet. Mariota picked up 17 yards on the play, setting up another Oregon touchdown.
Now obviously, teams don't want to see their quarterback hurdling defenders regularly, but the move sure is exciting when executed properly.
Mariota recorded a season-high 367 yards on 19-of-25 passing, tallying six total touchdowns in the 47-19 smattering of rival Oregon State.
4. Buries Utah's Hopes and Dreams
7 of 10
Mariota the athlete has been fun to watch, but his exploits as, well, a quarterback are even better. Though the throw itself isn't flashy, his understanding of the position is on full display.
After controlling a horrid snap, Mariota quickly progressed through two reads on the left side and then lasered a pass to Dwayne Stanford between two defenders.
Utah had scored 79 seconds before to cut the Ducks' lead to three points, but the touchdown provided Oregon a 37-27 edge and triggered a 21-point run en route to a 51-27 victory.
He recorded 239 passing yards and three scores, adding one touchdown and a season-best 114 yards with his legs.
3. Hits Stanford in the Corner
8 of 10Throw power? Check. How about some accuracy and touch?
Against Washington, there was only one person who could catch this gorgeous pass to Stanford. Though the sophomore receiver is due credit for his route and catch, Mariota's ball placement was absolutely stellar.
Long story short, this is the type of throw Mariota must make in the NFL. His deep accuracy can be an issue at times, but he's clearly capable of tossing some gems.
Mariota ended the 45-20 rout with 336 passing yards and two touchdowns, connecting on 24 of 33 attempts.
2. Razzle Dazzle in the Pac-12 Championship Game
9 of 10Sometimes a defense cannot do anything better, and Arizona's unit did exactly that—everything correctly. But sometimes, a quarterback cannot be stopped—like Mariota on this particular play.
He stepped up in the face of pressure, slid past a wonderfully timed delayed blitz and changed directions to escape the five Wildcats in the backfield.
Jonathan McKnight's coverage was certainly suspect, considering he never truly contested Oregon wideout Darren Carrington at the catch-point.
Nevertheless, Mariota's elusiveness shined in the Pac-12 Championship Game. The Ducks blasted Arizona 51-13, driven by Mariota's 346 yards of total offense and five touchdowns.
1. Perfect Throw on the Run
10 of 10
This throw opposite Stanford—a team he had never beaten—encompasses Marcus Mariota the elite NFL prospect into one highlight.
He dropped back, pump-faked, progressed through two reads, stepped up into a pocket that was collapsing from the back and carefully toed near the line of scrimmage.
Then, Mariota squared his shoulders to rifle a pass over two Stanford players, away from another and hit Carrington—his third option—in the hands. Ultimately, the quarterback was simply impossible to defend.
Oregon blasted the Cardinal 45-16, and Mariota finished the redemption contest 19-of-30 for 258 yards and two passing touchdowns along with 85 rushing yards and two rushing scores.
