Marco Reus Warning Sent to Real Madrid, Chelsea, Arsenal and Co. by Dortmund CEO

Nick AkermanDec 11, 2014

Borussia Dortmund general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke has warned suitors of Marco Reus that the German forward would "love" to remain at the Westfalenstadion.

Real Madrid, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United are among those reportedly interested in luring Reus away from Dortmund, per Anthony Chapman of the Express. Bayern Munich are also keen, according to Sky Sports, but Watzke has suggested these clubs face a difficult battle to separate Reus from his home community, as reported by the Press Association, via the Daily Mail.

"I believe that fundamentally Marco would love to stay here because he loves the city and he loves Borussia Dortmund," Watzke said. "But I'm sure the people who are interested in him moving will provide him with other arguments."

Watzke also confirmed Reus won't be sold for financial reasons, saying, "We're aiming to build revenue to around 300 million by 2017-18, but that excludes transfers. That would mean we would be able to invest an additional €20 million in the team than we can now."

In truth, Reus' departure is unlikely to be of great financial value to Dortmund. The player's £20 million buyout clause comes into effect at the end of the season, a bargain sum many of the elite clubs can easily afford.

BVB supporters have already seen Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski head to Bayern, the latter of whom moved on a free. Another star moving below his value certainly wouldn't aid the side's financial matters and ability to find a suitable replacement.

Watzke and the board may also have to factor in this season's difficulties. Dortmund are currently 10 points off the Champions League places—having suffered eight defeats from their opening 14 matches—and have no guarantee of making next season's elite competition.

Forbes previously reported the club received $70 million (approximately £44.5 million/€56.1 million) for making the 2013 Champions League final. A solid run through this year's competition—and, indeed, qualification at the end of the seasonmay be key to holding on to match-winners such as Reus.

Bundesliga specialist Raphael Honigstein and Norwegian pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft highlighted the confusion surrounding Reus' future:

The incisive forward has scored six goals and provided three assists in 11 appearances this season, per WhoScored.com. Reus is the type of player who can improve any side in the world. Although his recent injury problems may put clubs off, his buyout clause ensures minimal risk.

Watzke's comments could later come round to haunt the player, who may be seen as turning his back on Dortmund's community. It's unlikely the club will challenge for the domestic title anytime soon, however, meaning Reus would be smart to look elsewhere if he wishes to maximise his chances of silverware.
