Chicago Bulls Should Be Well-Represented at 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend

Andres MonteroDec 10, 2014

The Chicago Bulls have one of the most complete rosters in the league, and it will show this February during All-Star weekend.

From the Rising Stars Challenge to the All-Star Game, the Bulls have players who could be considered for each of the five central events.

Chicago's rookie duo is sure to draw some attention given its popularity and solid play. The Bulls have also stocked up on three-point shooters, and a handful of them are performing exceptionally well.

Most importantly, the Bulls have a handful of All-Star-caliber players. With three All-Stars on the roster and Jimmy Butler in the midst of a breakout season, the Bulls could take an unprecedented four players to Brooklyn for the main event on Feb. 15.

Players labeled as nominations are ones who should be considered for the event or fit the mold for the competition. A "likely participant" tag indicates a good possibility that player will be included in the specific contest.

Let's look at the five primary events and the Bulls players who could potentially enter them.

Rising Stars Challenge

1 of 5

Likely Participants: Doug McDermott and/or Nikola Mirotic

Taj Gibson was the last Bull in the Rising Stars Challenge, playing with the sophomore squad in 2011. With a lottery pick in Doug McDermott and an impressive Euro transplant in Nikola Mirotic, Chicago should be back in the event with at least one player.

McDermott has struggled this year, and while he hasn't seen much court time, he was a fairly popular figure during his time at Creighton. Fans may still like to see him out there, and the NBA wants players who will draw viewers.

Mirotic, on the other hand, may have to depend on his performance.

The former Spanish League MVP had a very good string of games while Gibson was out with an ankle injury, posting two double-doubles and surpassing double-digit scoring in four consecutive games. Once Gibson returned to the lineup, Mirotic lost a majority of his minutes.

The Bulls do have an injury-prone frontcourt, though, so the former Real Madrid star could have a few more chances to showcase his talent.

As it stands, Chicago's two rookies have a solid chance to make the final player pool.

Skills Challenge

2 of 5

Nomination: Derrick Rose

Derrick Rose won the Skills Challenge in 2009 during his rookie season. After failing to participate the following year, he returned in 2011 and lost the title to Stephen Curry.

Rose is built for an event like this: He has the speed, ball-handling and agility to go through the course with ease. The three-point shot is probably his biggest hurdle, as he's shooting just 30 percent this year.

With the new format the league introduced last year, we saw a lot of the NBA's budding stars participate, including four rookies.

It may choose to go this route again, showcasing the new talent that has come in over the last two or three years. Guards like Elfrid Payton, Zach LaVine and Dante Exum could take spots in the competition. Damian Lillard and Trey Burke are likely to return to defend the title.

Rose is a definite possibility if invited. Then it will depend on if his body tells him it's OK.

Three-Point Shootout

3 of 5

Nomination: Mike Dunleavy or Nikola Mirotic

It has been close to two decades since Steve Kerr won the Three-Point Shootout; he was also the last Bull to participate in it. But maybe that could change this year.

The Bulls have five rotation players shooting over 36 percent, with Mirotic and Mike Dunleavy as the best fits for this type of competition. Both are solid spot-up shooters, which is a benefit in the way the contest is set up.

While Mirotic (38 percent) is shooting slightly better than Dunleavy (36 percent), the latter has attempted more than double the amount of three-pointers than his rookie teammate has. The former Blue Devil is also top-10 in terms of percentage among Eastern Conference players who have taken 90 or more long-range shots.

Dunleavy is a proven shooter and has an established reputation, whereas Mirotic has a very small sample size due to his inconsistent minutes. Small chance either player makes it, but Dunleavy could if he keeps shooting the ball well.

Slam Dunk Contest

4 of 5

Nomination: Jimmy Butler

This is probably the event the Bulls are least likely to participate in. Butler isn't very flashy, but he's shown he can get up and throw it down.

However, there could be some stiff competition.

John Wall was declared the best dunker last year and could return to build on that resume. With younger talent being so prevalent in these events, the freakishly athletic Giannis Antetokounmpo could take another slot. Victor Oladipo or K.J. McDaniels could also be possibilities as the NBA tries to showcase its up-and-coming players.

It makes for a tight race to get one of the three spots, assuming the league keeps the same format from 2014.

Tyrus Thomas was the last Chicago representative in the dunk contest back in 2007, and it will likely stay that way for another year.

All-Star Game

5 of 5

Likely Participants: Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Pau Gasol and Jimmy Butler

The Sunday main event could be the most-populated by Chicago.

Pau Gasol is having a career year so far, averaging 20 points and 12 rebounds per game. He's done it on both ends of the floor as well, blocking nearly two shots every night. He became the third Bull in the last decade to have a 20-20 game, joining Joakim Noah and Luol Deng, per Bulls statistician Jeff Mangurten.

There will be some strong competition from the rest of the conference, though.

Two of the frontcourt spots are pretty much guaranteed to go to LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, with the third possibly going to someone like Kevin Love or Chris Bosh. Gasol's best shot would be the coaches' vote, and with numbers like those, it'd be hard to say no.

Noah could also join him on the squad. He's earned All-Star honors the past two seasons, but the reigning Defensive Player of the Year will have to stay healthy. He'll have to build on his recent performances as well, which have been more reminiscent of those from last season.

As for the backcourt, Rose is a three-time All-Star and has started twice. He's been out of commission for two years, but his name should still show up on a large number of fan ballots.

He'll have to beat out the rest of the East guards, as there's a lot of competition for the backcourt.

Dwyane Wade will garner many votes and could get one of the two spots again. Kyrie Irving—who started in last year's game—will also draw a lot of attention, along with Wall, Kyle Lowry and Rajon Rondo.

Rose's only chance is the fan vote, as he hasn't exactly been playing at an All-Star level and is unlikely to be voted in by the coaches. His Chicago backcourt partner, however, could end up with that honor.

Butler is having a breakout season and is on pace to set career highs in points, rebounds and assists. The four-year swingman is averaging nearly 22 points per game, close to a nine-point bump from last season. He has a much-improved post game, and his ability to finish in the paint is clearly better.

Butler's defense is also of note, as he's quickly becoming one of the league's better two-way players. If he continues to play at this level, there's no question he'll be in the All-Star Game this February.

All four Bulls may not make it, especially if Rose can't beat the competition and Noah's health is a concern. But the Bulls have a good shot at having two All-Stars this year.
