Erik BeastonDec 9, 2014

This week's SmackDown is the penultimate stop on the road to TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs, and World Wrestling Entertainment taped its weekly Friday night broadcast in front of the fans of Columbus, Georgia.

With a plethora of high-profile gimmick matches on tap for this weekend's big show, the stars involved took center stage.

Ryback, Dolph Ziggler and Erick Rowan battle Kane, Luke Harper and Big Show in a preview of three hotly anticipated bouts. John Cena and Seth Rollins attempt to talk fans into caring about their Tables match, and Jack Swagger forces Titus O'Neil to tap out to the Patriot Lock ahead of his match against Rusev for the United States Championship.

Recorded the same night as WWE's annual Tribute to the Troops special, some of the marquee stars were forced into double-duty.

Did it affect the show from a quality standpoint? How would the crowd react?

While we have to wait until Friday to have those questions answered, you can find out now exactly what happens on this week's show (courtesy of spoilers from WrestlingInc.com).

Venue

Columbus Civic Center in Columbus, Georgia

Broadcast Team

Tom Phillips, Michael Cole and John Bradshaw Layfield

Results

  • A segment featuring some of the top stars involved in this Sunday's pay-per-view, such as Dolph Ziggler and Erick Rowan, kicks off the show.
  • The Usos defeated Tyson Kidd and Cesaro. After Kidd and Cesaro made their entrance, a vignette aired and hyped the impending debut of The Ascension.
  • Nikki Bella defeated Alicia Fox.
  • Jack Swagger defeated Titus O'Neil.
  • Big E defeated Goldust.
  • John Cena and Seth Rollins cut promos about their Tables match this Sunday at TLC.
  • Dolph Ziggler, Erick Rowan and Ryback defeated Big Show, Kane and Luke Harper. After the match, chaos reigned supreme. The babyfaces used ladders and chairs from ringside on the heels before Ziggler sent a ladder crashing down on Big Show, Harper and Kane to end the show.

Analysis

SmackDown has a reputation for being the B-show in World Wrestling Entertainment for a reason. Friday night, it looks very much like the show will live up (or down) to that reputation.

One look at the results from Tuesday's tapings sees a card that looks very much like a placeholder, a show that exists only because it has to.

How many times are fans expected to watch the same mix of Ziggler, Ryback, Rowan, Kane, Harper and Big Show compete against each other in the wake of the Survivor Series before we tune out?

Considering the fact that the company has a major event this coming weekend, one would have assumed that WWE Creative would have gone out of its way to write a show with a greater impact on the pay-per-view.

The presence of Cena lends credibility and much-needed star power, but even he and his promo with Seth Rollins cannot rescue what appears to be a very lackluster presentation ahead of Sunday's TLC.

Keep an eye on The Usos vs. Cesaro and Kidd, though. If given time, it could be a tremendous wrestling match.
