Kennedy Discusses Deron to Kings
Tuesday, Feb. 17
Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders spoke to Stephen Nelson of Bleacher Report about the chances of the Kings re-igniting talks around Williams:
"For those who may have wondered, Kings-Nets talks re: Deron Williams still dead. He's out on West Coast trip (rib) w/ Monday return likely," reported USA Today's Sam Amick on Jan. 21.
On Dec. 24, Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Nets' desire to retain Mason Plumlee was causing a snag in the team's negotiations with the Kings surrounding a potential trade of Williams:
"The Sacramento Kings' insistence on a trade package for Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams that includes center Mason Plumlee has pushed talks into a hiatus, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
After the teams' front office officials again talked on Wednesday, both sides insisted they weren't budging on Plumlee's inclusion into a proposed trade and agreed there was no use discussing the deal further in the near future, league sources said.
'Talks aren't dead, but nothing's going to happen with Plumlee involved,' a league source told Yahoo Sports.
"
Wojnarowski's report came one day after ESPN's Chris Broussard reported the same.
On Dec. 20, Wojnarowski first reported on the negotiations between Brooklyn and Sacramento. "No deal is imminent," Wojnarowski noted at the time, while also stating the Kings desired to have Plumlee included in the deal. However, Howard Beck of Bleacher Report followed Wojnarowski's report, stating, "Nets consider Plumlee virtually untouchable."
Williams Being Shopped by Nets
Tuesday, Dec. 9
According to ESPN.com's Marc Stein and Ohm Youngmisuk, the Nets are shopping Williams along with two of their other premier players:
Stein and Youngmisuk added, via that report:
"League sources told ESPN.com that the Nets, off to a disappointing 8-11 start and looking to retool after last season's $190 million roster filled with veterans couldn't advance beyond the second round of the playoffs, have let it be known that they are prepared to move any of those franchise cornerstones in what would likely be separate deals if they came to fruition because of the high salaries each possess.
Sources say no trade is imminent involving any of the three players.
"
Williams is obviously the top draw in play. The 30-year-old guard and three-time NBA All-Star is due $21 million in the 2015-16 season and $22.3 million in 2016-17 though he could opt out of the final year in his contract during the summer of 2016, per the ESPN report.
That will leave Williams with an interesting choice, as it's hard to imagine he'll garner max-level money on the market unless he plays at a very high level over the next two seasons. The Nets might prefer to free up some of that cap space for the upcoming free-agent classes, however.
Teams might be more interested in Brook Lopez, as he's the youngest of that trio. But for a team looking to add an instant impact player and can also afford to absorb a large contract, Williams could be the final piece for a playoff push. If he's indeed on the market, the Nets will likely have multiple suitors.
